I've been playing Pocket Billiards for many years. I've recently been bitten by the Carom Billiards bug. Does anyone know of a decent instructional DVD?

Much appreciated! Cheers, -Z-

I don't know of any instructional videos but there are books on shots and diamond systems which are very good and really informative. The billiard atlas by Walt Harris are very good.Ithink there are 4 volumes.Pool Hall Paul

I think the best introduction to 3-cushion is still Byrne's New Standard Book of Pool and Billiards, combined with a regular diet of videos of top players (actively - not passively- watched). CaromTV has the largest selection by far, but Kozoom and Accu-Stats have some great matches as well even though their catalogs are smaller. Frederic Caudron's book is very good, but it's expensive and not as useful if you don't read French very well.

Warning: If you start with a bunch of systems as a beginner you will likely develop a billiard blindness that will be difficult to overcome later. The problem is you immediately try to force every layout into something you can calculate, and usually end up overlooking patterns that are much more natural for a position just because you don't have a system for it.

Have fun and good luck!

Great advice Robert,

Don't get bogged down with all the systems. Walt Harris's books for instance are neat and fun, and I own all of them, but too much information for starting out. He shows various systems for doing the same thing for instance. They're worth buying but don't get trapped thinking you need them all.

As with everything in sports master the basics. Learn the 5 system known as The Diamond System. Learn the Plus 2. and I always recommend (not that it's right) learning how to Clock the CB. Personally I Clock a very large percentage of shots using basically 2 hits. Very thin and 1/2 ball, and forget the math required with most other systems. Little Joe Villalpando's "Cue Ball Control" DVD has a very good explanation on a pool table. www.pooliq.net

What I want to know is who can teach recognizing a kiss and how to get out of it.

I agree with the above. Get the two Byrne books and get a bunch of Accu-Stats tapes. Personally, I buy the ones that have the longest playing time, regardless of who's playing or commentating :). But if you can afford it get ones with Blomdahl talking.

And Bob Raiford's distinction that the tapes need to be watched actively and not passively is a good one. I literallly watched my tapes 'til they didn't play well anymore, and 'til I had memorized the dialogue and eventually just listened to music while continuing to watch the matches, and 'til my marriage suffered, and 'til ... just 'til. And then I watched local players for hours. And then I would drive an hour away to watch other players. Did this make me a good player? Of course not! But at least I can watch a game intelligently and maybe ? 85 percent ? of the time predict what shots the great players will play. THEN, I think, learning to hit the balls well begins. Which I'm going to get around to any day now.

Start with Byrne's book--you shouldn't have to go any farther. Consider buying a few of the 3-c matches from Accu-Stats. Byrne does the commentary and analyzes the shots.
