Does anyone play this? Play eight ball only you have to make your solid or stripes in order? Seems like it would be fun, I just don't hear anyone talking about ever playing it.

I think last pocket 8 ball is a good game. There's a lot of strategy involved. Rotation 8 ball sounds like it'd be really hard, but maybe i'll try it.

Yeah I mean I play regular rotation and can run out here and there on tough equipment, why not 8 ball? Run out in rotation meaning 1-11 or to 61 points.

I played a lot of rotation in the 1960 to 1970's...mostly 5 ways with partners. Money on the 1,5,10,15, and total points(61 or more). Fun game. Johnnyt

When

I practice 8 ball, rotation 8 ball (I call it Dakota 8 ball) is the only way I practice. And I am old school, playing someone else is NOT practice, it is a competition. Practice should be by yourself, or with an instructor.

You work on your 'weak points' when practicing, or to fine tune the regular things you come across in competition. You also concentrate on learning what you do not know how to do.

One of my assets I have been told, is my ability to play shape off of any shot. Well, when I learned how to play shape, I shot all kinds of various shots on the table using 12 different types of english for each shot, and watched where the cue ball went after each shot.

Then after that, as suggested, I made a 6" circle out of paper, and laid it down on the table where I wanted the cue ball to be after each shot I shot. Gradually, I learned how to control the cue ball to be where I wanted it to be.

I also had some problems with shooting spot shots. I studied the situation, learned about using the diamond when shooting from the kitchen line, and I shot 200 spot shots in a row one day. I have never had a problem with spot shots since then, 45 years ago.

Another thing that I took up later was shooting 'rolling ball or wing shots' as a little side hobby. This improved my line of sight on shots, and helped establish a 'rhythm' for me when I played normally. I still do this sometimes as a 'fine tuning' tool for my playing.

When I warm up for a tournament, which isn't too often anymore, I shoot some various shots, but then I concentrate on 'bank shots', all kinds of bank shots. It brings my aiming to where I want it to be, and gives me that 'lean green mean' machine feel.

Only against my wife.

Me too. I mean as a spot. But not against your wife. I mean I don't know your wife (I swear). But if I did I'd be glad to give her that spot. If she wanted it. If you approve. I'm shutting up now.

I played it but it didn't create much interest and fun compared to playing rotation. it eliminated the option of going for the other balls for points. it decreases your potential to learn combos and caroms. at the end of the day, it's more apparent the you're playing 9-ball (rather than rotation) except that you need to pocket all your balls first.

plain rotation is fun considering that you were able to pocket balls guarantee you some points even if you lost, brings joy and sense of accomplishment. unlike 8-ball rotation where it doesn't matter if you pocket how many balls and still lost for not pocketing the 8. the sense of accomplishment is thrown out of the picture.

Eightball with 9 ball rack

Try this variation of 8 ball; rack up 4 solid and 4 stripes ,mix them up in a 9 ball rack with the 8 ball in the middle, this is a fast game of 8 ball that can lead to some quick runouts but very critical position , because if u run out your 4 colors and don't get the eight ,your opponent has has an open table with only 4 or less colors to shoot at, so playing safe comes up a lot in this version of 8 ball and u can try it playing your 4 colors in rotation also.

I used to play against the wife before we got divorced, with similar rules. If I had solids, I could only shoot the 1 or 7 and could swap back and forth to either end. That only allows you 2 balls to shoot at. If you don't run out when you get a shot, it could be trouble. She played on a couple of teams that won State VNEA titles, and could play safe occasionally. Made life difficult sometimes. You can make up different variations too, depending on who you're playing against. Only problem is, it don't help with your pattern play for regular 8-ball
