Does the fact that there is no trust among players say something about pools image?

Ive been playing regularly for around 4 years now and have noticed that the people that gamble in my home room are all friends. People that give each other perma-action, but will allow anyone else to jump in if they are feeling like a friendly game of cheap whatever. It's mostly all cheap, a few 50 or 100 buck games, but nothing higher than that, ever.

Players that we don't know, or know too well that come in out of nowhere are never ever trusted. Money is posted ever game, even for a 5 buck game. There is no confusion, there are no misunderstandings, and no one forces anyone to bet what they can not afford..... and yet. There are stupid people. I blame stupid people for most of the trepidation when it comes to trust and action in halls all over the place. Idiots with more faith in their ability than money in their wallet tend to make things worse for everyone. But this is nothing new.

I prefer to lose 80.00 to a friend over an evening of pool and talking smack than to some road player I will never see again. Mostly because I will likely be getting my 80 back later on down the road from that very same friend when I catch him on a night they forget how to play pool. Heh...

VANITY FAIR magazine (p. 160 of the March [current] issue) has a very interesting article about this topic at the absolutely opposite end of the socio-economic scale: international tournament bridge.
