Does the prevalence of one-pocket hurt the overall pool game in the US?

Hmm. Interesting thread.

I'll put it this way:
Unless you play proficient 1pocket, 14.1, AND 9ball, you're no Harold Worst.

Who's the Worst in the house these days? (pun intended)

Ruining Pool

I am from New England, and I agree 100% about no young people, but definitely not about One Pocket. Up here, young people have nearly completely disappeared from pool. And it happened all of a sudden too, about 10 years ago. And it definitely had nothing to do with One Pocket, because that is not a very popular game up here. It gets played by some of the better pool players, but no way is it the dominant game up here. I think the exodus of young players had more to do with internet and video games.

If you asked me, the biggest difference between the Euro and American pool is the prevalence and acceptance of professional training discipline on the other side of the pond -- not so much over here

Straight pool also has a lot of soft, low cue ball movement shots -- but you don't hear much about it ruining pool lol.

Good Point. You know us Americans we lose a match and we blame everything but ourselves.

Of those who practice

The only Euro i've watched playin one-hole is Fajen and he can dab it. Doesn't hurt his run-out game. Appleton plays it pretty well also. I still think a steady diet of it will dull your rotation speed.

Since it hasn't hurt Efren and Pagulayan much as well at this Fajen you mention and Appleton plays it pretty well, it makes me wonder if the problem is that when people gamble for a living at it do they think they need to practice every once in a while? Maybe they just think they hit em so good they don't need to unless there is some money involved?. I'm sure all of the players make balls just fine but position work is subject to touch and if you go around never shooting stroke shots to move the cue ball greater distances whose fault is that? It seems to me a concerned professional would take something like that into account every once in awhile and it shouldn't be much of a problem after all rotation games are a pretty large slice of the Pool Pie.

How would 1 pocket work with a 20 second stop clock? Picking the right shot quickly is a skill, and it would certainly make the game more watchable.

Anyone tried speed 1 pocket?

I wish,,,,,,, that people that don't play, or understand the game of one pocket, would quit trying to fix it.

Every game of one pocket is different. I have played 15 minute games and I have played games that have lasted one and a half hours. The table lay out and your opponent dictate the speed of the game.

Maybe but

Id play it with a friend for laughs, thats it because it would change the game way too much and wouldnt be the same game at all.

I'm 63 & only started playing one pocket last year. I asked one of the best overall pool players in the area if one pocket can ruin your stroke.

He nearly yelled, "Absolutely... you have to work to keep it."

He was jerking your chain. Like any other game in pool you must have an excellent stroke to be successful, and One Pocket is no different.
Ask him again.

No need to

I dont think theres much need to ask because thats a stage you go through when learning.

The point being that you are hitting so many very soft shots that your stroke can get short & even pokey if not careful.

He did not say that it WILL as that was not the question I asked. I asked CAN it.

He understood what I meant & there is no need to ask him again. He is not the kind to jerk anyone's chain when it comes to playing the game.

Also like Fran Crimi has said on more than one occasion & I agree with her, that sometimes you need to just let your stroke out & see what you've got & by doing that you can sometimes get a kink out that has crept in.

All the Best for You & Yours.
