I am not killing anything. I am exposing the weakness of a opponent which is what you should do in any game. I do not play in the US Open tournament. My matches are not televised. What does my safety play have to do with the health of the game? It sounds like your beef is with the rules. If you don't like them perhaps you should work on getting them changed instead of *****ing at people who like to play the game the way it is currently being defined.

He's just playing the game his way. He is not killing anything, playing smart pool isn't killing anything and turning it into a lightning fast game of mistakes wont save anything.
Maybe some peoples way of playing the game annoys you and that's fine. Don't play them. But why do you feel this need to control how everyone is doing something.
And by the way, safety play isn't necessarily slow play. Last year I played in a small (20 people or so) 9 ball tournament that was a race to 3 double elimination. I won every game I played, played smart defensive shots when I needed to and never had one match last over 15 minutes. Was I killing the game? No, just my opponents.
Probably playing safe and moving his balls into better run out options. Nothing wrong with that. If you thinks its the bad move and you can beat him while he is doing that, then go for it.

Obligation? I play in league/tournys and buy lots of pool equipment. I think I have done my fair share.

No, killing your opponent is not a win. Go ahead and try it and come back and tell me I am wrong.
This wasn't aimed at me but I would like to offer my answers to this.
1. Do I feel obligated to the game itself? No, I feel no obligation whatsoever to dumb down the way I play the game.
2. How can one change the rules without first changing the mindset of players? EASY, just do it. There is no need to change the players mindset in order to change the rules. You will never get everyone to agree on everything.
um uh are you sure? Talk to about 10-15% of the one-pocket players out there. They are not many but they are around.
Do you get a chuckle out of it when they still beat you 2 to 1?
Do you have a separate category for defensive players who enjoy chess and get beat two to one by checkers players?

If you're the kind of player who plays numerous wimpy safeties when you're not even playing for money or in competition then there's no telling what you might do to win.
Just kidding. I don't really believe that. Really.
Unless you dumb it down by playing dumb safeties when there are available reasonable shots? Why don't you just have more confidence in your shooting ability?
