Does this mean the USOpen is Open?

There is a men's US Open and a women's US Open. Would it be fair if the women were able to compete in both and the men only in one?

I'm cool with women playing in the men's US Open as long as we get to play in theirs.

The Men can earn $100,000 for winning the World 9-Ball Championship. The Women can earn $20,000 and it goes downhill from there.

The wheelchair players are allowed to play in the US Open if they are male.

What about all the amateurs and no-name players who have day jobs who enter the US Open? What happens when one of these players has a good day and knocks Johnny Archer out of the event? Aren't these players also "double dipping" by taking money away from "the struggling pros"?

The fact is that IF it weren't for all the "suckers" who have little to no chance to get in the money then the US Open wouldn't be able to pay anything worthwhile.

I say let EVERY LIVING BREATHING HUMAN who wants to put $500 into the prize fund play. If a woman ends up near the top or even WINS it then it will only serve to get more publicity and entice even MORE people to try next year. Imagine all the shortstops who would swim a river of garbage to play any woman for money.....they couldn't STAND IT if a woman finished high at the Open and they didn't play.

Look what Chris Moneymaker did for poker. If he's not a "sucker" I don't know who is.

Well considering there is a Women's US Open is it fair or right that they can play in this US Open too? To me it doesn't matter, the more the merrier, but is it fair for women to have 2 US Open tournaments to compete in while men barely have the 1?

Yes, it is fair in the same way that there could be a Junior U.S. Open, a Senior U.S. Open, a wheelchair U.S. Open, etc. and all of there participants would be allowed to play in the U.S. Open. As long as men tend to win all of the tournaments with the top men and women in them we have to assume that men have some kind of advantage over women and therefore it is OK for them to have a tournament excluding men.

The U.S. Open with no qualifier in front of it (women, senior, wheelchair, etc.) should allow anyone in and let the best pool player win.

The US Open is privately owned by Barry Behrman. Therefore there is no legal issue regarding sexual discrimination.

The US Open doesn't need to include women anyway. The women already have an Open. There are plenty of other tournaments that are available to both men and women.

Alot of us view the US OPEN as a tournament to find the best player period regardless of sex. If women are not included is it truly OPEN? Change the name to MENS US OPEN & there can be no more debate.JMO. AN event that says OPEN without Mens, Womens, Wheelchair, JR. or whatever attached should be OPEN to everybody.

I disagree, I believe most of us view the US Open as a tournament to find the best male player(which to most means best PLAYER). Why would anyone view the US Open as a tourney to find the best player regardless of sex if women have never been allowed to play in it???
I do agree that it SHOULD be called the "Men's US Open" but that's not up to us.

That was my point -(best player) which cannot exclude anyone.

No need for clarification.....

My dad will begin posting himself next week.

In regards to the debate about women entering the U.S. Open, he wanted to let everyone know that the U.S. Open is only open to men. This year marks the 33rd year were only men have played in the men's division. He had a women's division for 11 straight years during this time, the men played in the U.S. Open as well. In 1993 the women formed their own tour which included the U.S. Open Women's only event which began in 1998 or 1999 and no man has ever played in their U.S. Open.
He agrees that it would be great for men and women to play together in some event in the future, but in a not major one such as the U.S. Open 9-Ball Championships. As we speak, the U.S. Open Tennis is on and they have their own divisions, rightfully so. Everyone knows my dad loves women; they receive a rose each night at the open, but when it comes to a major sporting event such as tennis, golf, or billiards he strongly believes the two should be separated. My dad's goal is to have as many of the greatest male player's from around the world at this year's U.S. Open. We Hope this clarifies a few things. ;)

Shannon, there is no need for your father or for you to come on board to explain anything to anyone. Those of us that understand what the U.S Open 9 Ball Championship is all about don't need further explanations. It is what it is, and your father should be damn proud of what he has done for our sport regardless of the dissenting opinions. This event is a Men's only event, and should stay that way. If people have issues with this, it is their own problem.

Keep up the good work!

Yours truly,

This subject comes up quite a bit these days. Lets face it,women are becoming stronger players. Strong enough to compete with men, and I might add, the best men players in the world! I will say there are only a few right now that can really compete at that level, but I believe there will be more in the future. (MANY MORE)

I dont see whats so tragic about women being equals on the pool table. Its a reality that should just be excepted and welcomed.
Women should be allowed to play.
Now I am only speaking the pro level tournaments.
In amateur playing, women do compete with men. And some usually do quite well because those women are equal on the table or even stronger players. You would think everyone would become accustomed to the womens presense. I dont think we are there yet.
Maybe someday!:)

I do agree this is a great event no one disputes the fact. However this is a great opportunity to take pool into the future by having both sexes compete together in this great tournament. You have the ability to take our sport into the future, do not miss this opportunity.
BE THE LEADER, CHANGE HISTORY!!!

from the story:
"The U.S. Open 9-Ball Championships has opened the field to give all the great players from America and all over the world the opportunity to play in this year?s U.S. Open."

So does this mean it's being opened to women as well as men, or does this just mean that all the great players are men?

I don't know of any pro event (outside of the Women only tours) that don't allow the opposite sex to play (EDIT.. just read more and seems US Open is for Men only, bit odd, but the rest of my post does not really change due to that). The women just don't chose to play against the men as they have very little to gain. Why play in a really tough field when you can play on the Women's tour where the competition is for the most part not as tough? Big fish little pond thing. That's why there are only 2-3 women you see constantly in the finals. They don't WANT to be compared to the men, because very rarely will they be compared favorably. Top 10 women players would be in the top 50 in men, maybe less.

The argument about women having more money making opportunities is not a very good argument, IMO. If that's a good reason to exclude the women, then we should also exclude all amateurs from entering, especially rich amateurs, since they do not spend as much time on pool and thus have more opportunity to earn money outside of the men's tournaments.

By this logic, we should also exclude the most financially successful male pros because they have already made enough money and could quit pool and survive by investing their previous winnings.

Increasing the money in pool is an important issue but separate one. The bottom line, IMO, is that from a fan's perspective, I want to see everyone compete for a shot at the title. I want to see the best pool possible, regardless of their gender, financial status, ethnicity, etc., especially when I'm watching the most prestigious events such as the US Open 9-Ball Championships.

. If the men are supposed to be the best of the best then a women that can compete at this level should be able to play in these events.

I got even money says a woman will not win the u.s.open tournament in the next 10 or 20 years...:D

Isn't the US Open sanctioned by the UPA anyway? That would mean it's MEN ONLY.

SM, the US Open is sanctioned so far by the WPA. This means that it is a points events towards the WPA ranking.

At one time, the UPA wanted the event to be sanctioned by them, and money put in escrow. No agreement was reached and the event was boicotted by some UPA members.

As long as the women are not allowed to play Barry Behrman's U.S. Open they will not be able to win it.

Pretty good chance if they can't play. You could probably give 1,000,000 to 1 & not have any takers.

I never said a woman would win the US OPEN, but to think they can't be competitive is very dangerous. Do I think Karen or Allison can beat Efren, SVB, Johnny or a 100 other top men in the WORLD over the long run-probably not, but to think they can't beat these players in a tournament is a little crazy.JMHO.
If they can't play with the men how are their games going to improve? You can't say that Efren didn't raise the level of play in the US. I think the more that women play with men the stronger their games will become, not to mention the amount of coverage this will bring to the sport, which means more money for everyone.

Ah, okay.

I still think it should be men only. It's only fair. The women already have one.

I think they need to play in more than 1 or 2 tourneys a year to be able to get to that level. They are fantastic players but as we all know, you can't get better unless your play with better players more often....

I think there are a couple women who could make it into the top 10.

If all you see is what is on TV - the reason you don't see them stringing racks together is because it is all alternate break.

I think it is great when women play in non-WPBA tournaments. I also think it is great that woman have their own tour.
