does your ebony cue have some brown streaks????

I just got a new Mcdermott cue that I ordered. (M3-3A) and the ebony has some brown streaking that kind of looks like brush strokes. I called the dealer I ordered it from and they said it was normal. I'm sure it is, but I was just wondering if any of you have noticed the same thing on the ebony parts on your cues.




(I know if you spend $2000 on a cue you probably won't see any imperfections in the wood, so I am talking about cues in the $400-$600 range.

There are different types of ebony wood. African or black ebony is just that.... pretty uniform in color. Then there is Macassar ebony, which is what you have. It is from Indonesia and is a different animal all together. You get the beautiful brown streaking in the grain.

ALL ebony can have some brown streaking in it. The ones that are all black are usually Madagascar or Gaboon, and even then if you hold it close enough to a light and look really close it isn't truely black (unless it has been colored).

Some brown streaking in a production cue that has ebony in it is pretty common. It is up to you whether to try and keep it I guess. Brown streaking can be very attractive if it is somewhat uniform and not just one streak or two here and there that looks out of place.

Macassar ebony has brown and black. It looks like Brazilian rosewood. Even much of the Gabon ebony (which is what we think of as jet black) has brown streaks or spots if you look closely under light, like Kelly_Guy pointed out. Some cue makers dye the ebony black. I prefer the natual look with the various colors myself.

It is quite common for someone to look closely and think they ebony was defective. It's not, that's the way the wood naturally looks.

There is nothing wrong or inferior or defective about your ebony. The brown streaks are just grains of the ebony, they are normal.

You are not getting them because of how much you have paid. You can see them on $4000+ cues.
