Doinking around with veneer rings....

I made a small die for cutting veneer rings. It cuts the ID great. The problem is cutting the od in a die. You have to use a piloted punch to get the ring centered which is no big deal, but the rings tend to break in half going through the die. they just aren't very strong and break with the grain. I usually just puch the ID with the die and chop cut the OD with a paper cutter. I cut them square and just turn them down once they are glued up.

I have seen it done with squares, a hole drilled & then glued up. The rings are square & get cut down once glued up. Seems like a lot of trouble making them nice & round to begin with. But hey, i'm not a veneer ring kinda guy so i'm not well versed in the matter, just seen it done a simple way & thought i'd share.

I have done some similar to the way you do but I used a forstner bit. I took two flat hardwood boards and drilled a couple of .625 and .750 holes into one of them. I then clamped the veneer between the board and used the holes as guides. When finished I band sawed the veneer apart.

the way i do my veneer rings is i take the veneers and glue then to my phenolic rings then chuck the ring up and bore out center. very very fast and easy. if i make multi veneered rings i glue them up like normal then glue them to the phenolic. veneers are square on the finished product then i trim and taper.

good way to cue out a few steps

You could prolly make em real quick on a panto.... Better yet send me the veneer and I will cut em on the cnc...

That's what I use to cut them out with John, and so far so good. I just glue a couple of the nic/sivler rings down on a birch strip, and use those as My templates. I think I use a 1/16 cutter with a 1/16 stylus, not sure but as long as both are the same size then the rings should come out to the same size as the ones that are glued to the template. The cutters I use are fairly aggressive chipbeakers, and they still cut them plenty clean enough, but I'm sure they could be cut even cleaner with a less aggressive endmill.
