dr dave please read.

In the North Island, most tables have the cloth at the end as Dave mentioned, but alot of bars, have the cloth on the rack as well. I think it is there,so no excuse for not protecting the table. It came about when they 1st bought pool and snooker tables to NZ. They were a very expensive item and it was seen as a way to make the cloth last longer.

When I first saw the hanging cloth, I wondered if it was for wiping or cleaning the balls. I was also tempted to use the cloth to wipe my hands, but I didn't embarrass myself.

thanks dave.
u proved my theory wrong. what makes me think i can feel the cb control better with a standard shaft? is just because ive used one for 20 some years. and only 2 years with a 314-2?

The mind is a powerful thing, and people don't like change. That's my best educated guess.

That Mike Page "vice grip pliers on the ferrule" video

for the life of me i can't seem to find this youtube video that i saw awhile back. it was really good. basically the guy hits a shot to demonstrate deflection then puts a vice grip on the end of the shaft, clamps it down then deflects the ball like 3 diamonds, illustrating shaft-end mass contributing to deflection. I think it also demonstrating clamping vice grip to joint area and having no noticeable impact. it was cool and informative video.

As an experiment for yourself, try taping some lead or something heavy to the end of your cue and notice the change in deflection regardless of whether or not its an LD shaft.

Tip contact time does not vary noticeably even based on tip hardness let alone shaft flex. For your statement to be true, you would have to be assuming that a high deflection shaft would be flexing so much that the cue ball doesn't leave the tip until significantly later than normal because of this flex.

The cue ball simply doesn't weigh enough to prompt this logic. Maybe if it were a medicine ball then this would matter.

Since the thread is calling out dr. dave, i think it would be really cool to glue a tip onto a fishing rod and measure tip contact time with the cue ball using something that would flex like a mofo. I would love to see that result. I would do it, but i don't have that super awesome camera equipment.

JJ:

Mike Page was the one who did the demonstrative video of deflection by clamping a set of vice-grip pliers onto the ferrule of a cue:

"pool sidespin--squirt & swerve revisited"
http://youtube.com/watch?v=mXJ7bDafTms

(At about 6:00 mins into the video, you'll see Mike apply a set of vice-grip pliers to the ferrule of his cue, and attempt to stroke the cue ball down a line.)

Hope this is helpful!

Clothes pins are more "gentle" (although not as dramatic):

Both videos are great. Is there a good way, other than just a lot of trial and error, to determine where the pivot point is for a specific shaft?

The procedure demonstrated here:

doesn't take very long once you know how it works.

Other than that, you can calculate the natural pivot length from a squirt angle measurement (see TP B.1), but this isn't easy without a squirt testing robot (for more info, see my September '07 and February '08 articles).

The last half of that video is exactly what I needed. Thanks!!!!

I am going to order the first 2 VEPS DVD's today. I love how you explain things in a simple, easy to understand manner.

I hope you enjoy and benefit from the DVDs. I'm going to try to finish the first draft of Disc III over the next two weeks. It is a very time-consuming process ... and I spend way too much time on AZB.

u proved my theory wrong.

Hmmm. Really??? Imagine that. lol.

what makes me think i can feel the cb control better with a standard shaft?

I'll hazard a guess since Dave is much to nice to do anything but shrug his shoulders at that question and you deserve a good answer...

I believe it's the same reason I think I know alot about time travel, communicating with aliens and creating the next great "hollywood diet" but those thoeries seem to be all wrong too. Im come to the conclusion that I don't have any fuxing idea what the fuxer Im talking about. I'm just guessing. But the mental masterbation part is sorta fun and I guess I like the attention my thoeries draw. Just sayin'.

Hope that helps! ;)

Welcome to AZ, Best regards.
