Drinking, Smoking, and Shooting?

back in the mid late 80s, I had a 9' gold crown at the house and every day did a dooby and drank a few beers. at the time, I shot "lights out"! today, I can't get that game back but I think it is due to age and not the lack of doobies or drinking. I might add that today's pot contains far more thc than in days past. that could be a problem at the table after imbibing on one of those and forget what you are at the table for!

It's called dope

It appears as though almost every sport has those that excel and use drugs to do it. They all try to ban the use of certain drugs and often have severe penalties for abusers that are caught. Some competitors will always search for an edge, whether it's coke, pot, alcohol or nicotine, etc.

I watched a guy loose after winning the hot seat match in the last tournament. He took his breaks and stepped out side to load up on THC I think it cost him the match. I guess it's up to the individuals choice.

Cigarettes, coke, pot and booze have long been an accepted part of the pool scene and it is so ingrained I don't see it changing. Makes me wonder why the big net works and the Olympics don't have pool. LOL

people are all wired differently ...what works for you may not work for some one else. saying one way works for you and any other way is b.s is.. well b.s .

speaking of driving while stoned or drunk. back in 1973 i was on my way home from a friends house where we had smoked a few and drank some tequila. i was not stoned or drunk but i was not 100 % sober either.

i was making a left hand turn onto the road i lived on and a truck was attempting to pass me at 70 mph. he took the whole front end off of my 2 week old cadillac i had just bought.if he had been just a few seconds later he would have caught me in the drivers door and i would probably not be here typing this. he was given a ticket for passing in a no passing zone. last time i ever put my self in that situation.

now as for my statement that a few drinks make me play better its true. it seems to loosen me up and i have no tension or negative thoughts. i just go into auto mode and rely on years of pocketing balls without thinking ....is this the right shot... am i aiming correctly...am i in the proper stance...if i miss , my opponent is gonna run out. etc..etc.. none of that crap is running through my head and nothing or no one around keeps me from losing my focus.

let me share this experience with you.

2013 vegas team nationals. my 1st time there and yes i was nervous. so were my team mates and it showed in their play. the 2 other guys had the deer in the head lights look going on and they absolutely sucked at the table. the 2 girls played their normal game.

i went and got a jack and coke and sat down. my g/f commented ...you drinking this early ? gonna settle my nerves was my reply. after gulping that one down i went and got another. after finishing that one ...one of the guys on the opposing team said you must be really nervous. i replied...not any more and he started laughing.

i got up to play the last match ...we were down 48-32. my opponent was another 5. iirc i had to hold him to 8 points or less for us to win. i won 38-4...score was 20-0. we won 52-48. i went up and turned the score sheet in and the person behind the counter said she had been working the nationals for 10 years and it was the 1st time she had ever seen a skunk occur there.

my 1st ever skunk in apa and i did it in my 1st ever match at the nationals. it may not work for you but it definitely works for me.

another occasion. i faced a 7 in 9 ball tri cups. after 2 racks i was down 18-2 and i was shooting like crap. as i was racking the 3rd rack i heard my name called i looked up and saw a team mate coming back from the bar carrying a beer. he said ..its for you. he said down this sucker and get in the game. end of the 4th rack i said get me another one. i won 38-32. after i started drinking i scored 36 [points to his 14. this was a 7 mind you and i am a 5.

i do not drink during regular league nights...only in play offs or higher. my stats when i drink vs when i do not drink don;t lie and that is no b.s.

I've never played stoned, but I was playing on a regular basis wile drinking. so I decided to try it sober. I've only played 3 nights sober and I think I suck so far. I over think the shot sober and I tend to poke and jerk the cue stick more . drinking takes the over thinking out and slows my stroke down . But Like I said I have never played sober so I will have to play sober some more. and see what happens.

Im 30 been gettin stoned for 10 or more yrs everyday all day so to me I dnt feel regular if Im not stoned but as for beer yes the Corona does have an effect both ways lol.....i played a great session only havin 2 or 3 drinks before my match and now im kinda a drunk on league nites and its hit or miss really......but to sum it up I do believe a couple drinks loosens u up for most

This is not about judgement. I don't care if you play best with a ball gag in your mouth with your eyes peeled back like "a clockwork orange" it was just a question. Obviously we all have a tipping point that we can succumb to, but the question is, do you have a hot spot. A induced state that leads to your best performance, and this is not opinion, it's when you play the best and most consistent. May be 3 beers no more, may be 6 shots, may be a blunt. We are not pros and I'm not asking to be a role model, but I will tell a kid nice shot. Hell, you want me to wear a suit to make pool players look more professional, fine by me, I like wearing a jacket and tie.

i would love to think that i play better when i am drinking but i just don't know really. I would say i do but there is no definite way of saying i do without others judging my play. So i guess its off to the experiment. i will get back to you and let you know what the deal is.

Ok I am back experiment complete. It turned out I am not as drunk as I think I am when good. Hahaha I had to and no I am not drunk right now. On a serious note I am better at all technical aspects of pool (not the best ever) when I am sober. When drinking I attempt shots that are low percentage and my cue tends to drift. Other than that I say sober is the way and don't play on an empty stomach. Good luck out there and have fun. Besides everybody's doing it.

I stopped drinking when I play pool. But I did not stop playing pool when I'm drinking!

I have done both. Played great sober drunk and stoned before. Also played horrible !

One time i had a big match lined up so i went to bed early woke up ate breakfast stretched. Tried to do everything right!. I go to the match and played HORRIBLE. From that moment on i said i am just gonna do what feels right at that moment.

And thats what i do.

I don't drink but have played stoned on plenty of occasions. I don't really notice much of a difference, I play inconsistently either way as I'm not that good.

I have a pretty large alcohol tolerance, I will usually have a shot of whiskey and a bottle of Budweiser an hour before leagues or tourneys and then warmup. Switch to soda and beer cycle from there. Not sure how it actually affects my game, does calm my nerves though...
