hi all ,well my boss is sending me to california on business from sa tex to san jose california ,any intresting spots to stop ? or maybe gt a quick game in? first time im going and driving that far any tips, on what to do and not to do??

san jose

If your in the San Jose area. The best pool spots is at California billiards in Mountain view. You can even find some money games there if your interested. Another hot spot is at Edgies in Milpitas, it's pretty close from San jose. There are also a lot of guys there that are looking for some action.

Besides the excellent rooms already mentioned, there is Fast Eddie's down south and over the mountain in Capitola (near Santa Cruz) or Action Bob's room in Gilroy called Garlic Billiards, I think. Not big time action spots but there are a few sharpshooters regularly hanging out there.

Sean, if you have the time, you should drive to Lake Tahoe. Its one of the most beautiful places on the planet, and more like what Northern California is all about. On your way through, stop at Hard Times in Sacramento. Travel on I-5 as much as possible, traffic on 99 and 101 can be a pain. Take GPS for SJ area or you will get lost.

lol , i never understood how to gt greenies ,well i wish i could meet some pros but i dont think theres anything going on but if u guys hear of anything let me kno...

sean, just drop in wherever and play and meet the people. Everywhere has someone good and if youre better than those already there, they'll come. I think you'll find more equitable action in the lowdown than the high-rise and much more fun. Just make sure your get value for your dollar ; the value of entertainment and being part of something.

for the plug but a slight correction, it is spelled Fast Eddy's, and I only correct caust if you google or try to get directions from website, fasteddysbilliards.com it won't come up. We don't have a lot of gamblers left, just Diego, Larry and Dick. But a lot of regulars that will play from 0 to 10. And of course Santa Cruz is a great town to visit with the beaches and the boardwalk as the main attraction.

Thank you for the correction. I should have known since it was my home room many years ago.

Besides the fellas you mentioned there is Kenny, who plays lights out but doesn't gamble because of his religious convictions. I stopped in last month and played him since there wasn't much happening in the room. He took me and wiped the floor with me. But thats Ok since I'll always accept a free lesson. And besides, he's a nice guy.

I'll see that you get some light action if you stop at Hard Times. I'll let you use a nice cue. Tony Chohan is around and a few other top players will be here next Sat and Sunday for the monthly tournament.

Carmel is nice, but they roll up the streets at 9:00 pm.

Hope to see you.

Take your time on your first "road trip". Try to visit a local poolroom every night. Just check the phone book and you will find them. Good rooms in Albuquerque and in Phoenix along the way. In L.A. I would recommend Hollywood Billiards (right off the 101 at Hollywood Blvd.) for an upscale fun atmosphere.

When you go into a new room, take your time to check things out. Buy a drink and sit at the bar or counter, and watch some people play. You will see who the best players are, and after a bit you can go over and watch their game. Sweat it a while, and then you can make a comment or two. A good opening line is as simple as "good shot". If you get a response, you can begin to talk a little more.

After a while, you will begin to talk about your trip and your desire to play. Then you will have a game. Most important of all, is to have fun!

thanks guys but im flying back and ive been told tuesday morning at10 am stop at vegas and then san antonio ,im sure all this will help boost my confidence ,i do however kno for a fact that i will be flying back to carmel and driving agaib back to texas in bout 2 months im planning on taking the 40 and go through sandiego and then i will try and find some action ,but i do have some nice pics i will post wen i get home...

I'll bet you got some pix of the sunshine on the beaches around Carmel and Santa Cruz. If you didn't, you missed more than the pool action.

See you next time.
