Duffren house cues ...

I was tapering down a Duffern house butt today and once again I noticed some small spots on the fresh cut maple.
It would be like wet Nelsonite might look if it were not completely dry.
After a while the spots started to weep a bit ... a damp stickey substance ...
This is not the first one to do this and this wood has been around for many years.
I would think it was WELL seasoned.
It is no big deal as it will dry in a few days and sand right out but what is going on here ...

I have not a clue as to what it is except it might be something they dipped the wood in way back when.
Any ideas?

I've seen this happen a lot too. It looks almost like mold growing & it appears rather quickly after the finish is removed. I take some steel wool & wipe it down with wax after a fresh cut and then it won't appear. I'm curious what it is as well.

I have hundreds of unfinished Dufferins sitting in my shop and have not noticed this with any of them, so maybe it is a result of the finish. I know that they used a UV finish and curing system for their cues.

That is a possibility.
UV that was too deep to set and remained a liquid.

Hundreds? ... wow ...
What is the value of a Duffern butt on the material market?

I have seen this some also... Dufferin used UV finish, and IMO this is uncured UV finish. If UV finish is sprayed onto the cue and gets into wood cracks and pores, light cannot hit the finish to cure it. When you cut off the top coat, it just runs out the pores ;)

I have offered some on this site and a few cuemakers have bought them. These are all unfinished butts (and some shafts) that were in the process when dufferin went out of business. I have purpleheart, ebony and whatever their basic wood was (morado??). Most have some gap where the spice is but still with a little work make a good full splice cue.

No not at all. It looks very much like blk mold & you can almost watch it grow it appears so fast after the clear is removed. Has to be the uncured UV...makes the most sense. Eddie if you have an old Duff cue spin it and sand the clear off the maple above the points....then look at it an hour later. Be glad to send you a moldy one if you'd like to inspect it yourself.

That's ok I'll take your word for it.... sounds like you've had your share of experience with that situation....

I only had an encounter once with a dufferin house cue years ago that had sap trapped under the surface !
