Dumb question about London, England...

I'm going to Europe and would like to find some billiard halls near where I will be staying....

I notice that some of the billiard hall addresses will say things like "Victoria" and others do not.

They all have postal codes like...

SE23 2UW
or
SW1W 9QJ

And on a map I see...
Victoria
Chelsea
Kennington
Etc. I assume these are "areas" of London?

What is the best way to find something nearby? Look in "yellow pages" for that specific area? Or is there a system to the postal codes which would indicate if something was nearby or not?

(Don't know where I will be staying yet...)

There may still be a snooker room in Hounslow, not far from London. I don't remember the name but it was upstairs with at least20-25 tables, if you find it you may never want to come back.

Yes, the districts in London are marked by names and quadrants. For example, SW means south west, SE south east, etc. Usually the names of the subway stations match the district name, so it's easy to find an area on the subway (the "tube" or "underground" as it's called) map.

Best thing to do is go to the bookstore here or order online a street map of London. It will also have a subway map. Most of the streets are short, except major streets like Oxford, Picadilly, and so forth - so if you can find the street you're pretty much home free.

Although I've visited London often enough, I've never played pool or snooker in London - so I don't know the rooms.

kennsington, chelsea, etc are areas in london....like any other city. swxx, nwxx etc are used kinda like postal codes, and they also deliniate sections of the city.

london is extremely easy to get around in. their metro is second to none, and you can travel in it armed with nothing more than a starting point and a destination. really puts nyc subway to shame, it's SO easy. so it doesn't matter a whole lot where you have to go to shoot pool/snooker.

there's a room where steve davis plays, and i'm sure someone here knows what and where it is.

The only Place for you to go

The place for you to go would be Victoria, Rileys,
There are a few guys there that play a little, Steve Knight,Raj Hundal,Imran Majid and Tony Drago,
It is right next to victoria bus station in London, they are one of the few rooms to have a couple of Brunswicks and you will and they will give you some cheap action as well.
Hope you have a good time.

I think this is the one you are thinking of:

Assuming you want to play American Pool, rather than Snooker or UK 8 Ball you'll want to go to one of the new US-style rooms. In London I know at least 2 of the Riley's chain of Snooker rooms have partially converted to US Pool due to the recent popularity of 9 Ball in the UK.

Some UK Pool links you may find useful, I'm sure if you ask around in their forums you can get up-to-date advice on the best rooms in London at present, and maybe even some friendly matches:

Hope this helps, enjoy yourself in London.

As Anthony said, the Rileys club at Victoria is where all the big guns play, you can find a lot of action there most days and nights.

There is a good club in Rushey Green, Catford, which is in South London called QStix, that is also an exclusive American Pool Club.

We have a lot of players from around the London area on Pro9, if you want anymore info, just put a post up there and you should be able to find any info you desire about pool around London.

Safe Trip!
