Okay, I know this sounds like a dumb question. I haven't gambled much in the past, but I have people that want to back me against some pretty good players lately. The few times I have played for money I have always played head up. My question is, if someone gives me the eight, how does that work exactly. Can I cheese the eight? Can i cheese the nine? Thanks for any comments. Because of my speed the people that want to back me assume that I know these simple things already.
 
Well, that depends on your agreement. The 8-ball as a spot is either:


Called 8 or
Wild 8.


If wild 8, than it is just like another 9-ball on the table. If called, you have just one less ball to make in rotation.

Like 8-ball said, it's just like having another 9-ball on the table. It would be good to try and protect is when you opponent is breaking so you would want to rack it in a particular safe place. Most people choose either the row behind the 9-ball or the row in front of it, watch his breaks and see which balls are going in to adjust placement.

Not entirely right, since the called 8 can be called for a pocket on a combo or carom into it. Some players will also call a pocket for it on the break.
 
Sorry, bad wording. If it is like another 9, it can be slopped in at any time. If it is called, well, obviously - it must be called...but is mostly like another ball to be made in rotation, unless of course, you call it for a combo, carom, kiss...etc.

If you combo it, it must go to the pocket designated. Unlike the 9 which might hit the point in the pocket do a zig zag and fly into the other corner pocket.


There's also the issue of what to do with weight when it is made on the break. Some people spot them, others have them stay down.


There are dozens of variations and ways to handicap 9-ball.
 
When asking for weight or a spot, get games on the wire if he will give it up, like in a race to 7 ask for 2 or 3 games. When asking for a ball, it depends on his and your speed, if you shoot the 6 under him, ask for the 6 & out. If he gives you the 7 or 8 don't ask if it is Call or Wild, cause you just gave away your advantage by reminding him, he will always say call.
Out of respect, you should call the shot on a weight ball.:)
Play the percentages, play to your bad ball and play him safe, if he gets
out often you made need to adjust the spot.:)

If someone is giving up the 8 (wild) then why on earth would he "call it" out of respect? Say it goes off the titties and into the other corner. If he called it then I wonder if there could possibly be an argument made that it didn't count?

Well I was thinking about a combo or carom shot. Of course you could roll it like the Cheese.:D Also if you call it, you don't have to call the pocket.
"I'm playin the 8 on a carom of the 4". If it goes you gain some respect for a good shot by the sweaters and the player. If it goes in another pocket like you posted, you still win, you don't get the respect, after all it is 9 Ball. :D

That is the way I always played when I had to ask for a spot. Back in the
late 80's I played the 7 under Tommy Kennedy. When I started beating him
he took the spot away and we played even. I gained his respect by calling difficult carom, bank or combo shots. This was while Buddy Hall was rail birding the match. When we were done playing at sat down to have a beer, Buddy Hall complemented me on my playing. That meant allot to me.

Yeah, some guys will say stuff like, " I have seen you shoot, I'll give you the call 8", no way i'm givin you the 7 or the Wild 8. Ya know stuff like that. It just depends.

But to answer your original question, yes you can roll the Cheese on the 8 or the 9. You can also win on three fouls if you can lock him up tight enough times.:)
 
Thanks for the explanations. I feel a little more confident knowing some different options. I played some sets for cash last night and won 4 out of 5, but to play the type of players that these people want me to play I think I need a little more experience gambling. I definitely see how it is a different game when theres money riding. Pressure can be hard to overcome. Although I did well, a couple of mistakes that were caused by the pressure would have been much more costly against a top player.
