Duro Quick Gel gone to pot?

I have installed hundreds of tips over a twelve year period and have always used Duro Quick Gel. I never had a tip come loose until this past year. I have been buying my glue from Walmart and every tube seems defective. Also, some of the tubes are mostly full of air.

I am wondering if others have experienced this problem. I guess I will have to switch to Locktite 454.

I haven't noticed any difference with the quality, but you are right, the tube is 1/2 full of air...JER

BlindWizard, I have always used the Loctite Quick Gel and it has been excellent for tips. :)

I have had about 4 or 5 tips come off in the last few months using Duro Quick Gel. I am wondering if they have changed the formula myself. But in Duro's defense all the tips came off off plastic imported ferrules. I suspect they are using an oily plastic of some kind. I got one back wiped the ferrule face surface with laquer thinner before installing tip and it stayed on as far as I know. I used Loctite 454 on another I just had to replace to see if it holds better. More tips have come off the last few months than in the last several years.

I have noticed this also, only It's hit and miss with me lately, one tube may be fine, then the next will have problems. I have also noticed the air in the tubes, wonder if that could have anything to do with the bad glue, because I have noticed in the past That I have to use a new tube everytime or would have problems even before all the air showed up in the tubes. I use a new tube everytime I do a tipping session, and that seems to help.

I come accross those type ferrules also Chris, there is something delrinish about them like you mentioned, and can be tricky to get to stick sometimes. Altough the shine up nice, Some even swell from the heat if you burmish them. Funny thing though, is I have shot with one of these ferrules, and some seem to play decent for what seems to be elcheapo ferrules. Some of the cues they come on are known to play decent for an import, so maybe that is why they use them even on the better imports.

I have been thinking about trying the 454 also. Does anyone know what the drying time is on It? I have not got around to trying It yet. Duro has always worked for me, so have just stuck with it till now.

Thanks, Greg

Duro

I was having tips starting to pop off with the Duro about 6 month ago. I switched to a industrial Locktite and have no problems now. I also had tips popping off almost all Cuetec cues. I now wipe with acetone and then apply the glue and they seem to stay fine that way. I use thin Super glue on the edge of the tip to shine and harden the edge, I bought a bunch of 3 packs at the dollor store as I figured they would be fine for that application. When I have used them 2 out of 3 will be almost all air or empty.

I've had problems with with the imports also and I use 454 Loctite. The last few I've been scuffing with 80 grit. I might have to try the lacquer and then scuff.

Ok guys, store your gel in the freg.No more problems. When the glue is exposed to heat, warm air or warm shop, it goes to shit. Keep your glue in the freg.

I recently had a ferrule replacement on a phillipino cue, I've done a bit of body work in my time and the ferrule material smelled like body filler to me. If this is what they are using then if you replace a tip you will need to wipe it off with acetone to get rid of all of the dust. When I took the ferrule off the tenon was only 1/4" long and the shaft was junk wood that I wouldn't use for a broom. We are being swamped with junk cues from the phillipines and the people that buy them expect for you to put a ferrule and tip on them and make the cue shoot great. Bottom line is if I see it's a phillipino cue I will not work on it.

i've had the same problem with cuetecs also. those cheap, soft waxy ferrules. i ended up using gorilla glue, seems to be working fine so far. i've done 30 cuetecs, had only one pop off after about a month. drawback is having to clamp and let glue dry for 24 hours.

I use a loctite gel but I also use their 770 primer with every ferrule that I am suspicious about. It prepares plastic for gluing and in my opinion does an excellent job.

only problem with the primer is that you must get it on tight immediately! If you are slow about putting the tip on the glue will flash harden and be too thick. This causes tips to pop off because the glue will shatter if too thick.

just more hot air!
