Now that the big Earl vs Daz no-side-pockets event is coming up, it's time to resurface this interview of Earl from 18 months ago. A lot of people probably have not seen it and it's the only place I've seen Earl elaborate on why he wants to remove the side pockets from the table.

The whole interview is great. He starts talking about the side pockets at the 22 minute mark.

Earl suggests a heated table, no side pockets. Corner pockets of 4.75", since position will be more difficult.

Here are the reasons Earl gives:

- Players will have to play 'wilder' position routes.

- Will add more 'mystery' to the game. Even if a pro gets BIH, he's not a given to get out.

- If a player makes one mistake (scratch), the other player can not run away with the match, because each will make fewer balls on the break, and even if they make a ball on the break they will not get out all the time.

He also advocates weights on your wrist, safety glasses, pole vaulting pole for a cue. I like Earl but he's crazier than a sh*t house rat.

And then when he loses, he will want a table with side pockets only! He will preach out against corner pockets!

B@T SH!T crazy is an understatement when it comes to earl. I listened to him go on and on one year in Vegas when I was setting up a practice table back in the 90's. It didn't take me long to realize how truly nuts he was and still is.

For me personally and my level I'd like to add side pockets on each side of the current side pockets and also end pockets in the middle between the corner pockets.
Also wouldn't mind if the pockets were 7 inches wide.

Watch out Earl..........

Our leagues love the tables with 7 inch pockets and they have many run out artists that only play once a week. You should see some of them twirl their cue like an airplane propeller after a run.

Just take the rails off the table. If you shoot a ball off the table, it's good. Carpet flooring would be a good idea.

Tough not to a scratch, though.

Freddie <~~~ would still miss

I want one of those weird mutant one-pocket tables that just has the two corner pockets behind the rack. Pure heaven.

I liked hearing his ideas, no matter how crazy people say he is. He just wants this game to become a recognized sport. I am excited for his four pocket match, and will be tuning in for sure!

The thing is that you have two very good players & someone must win & someone must lose. I think too many are placing importance on who wins.

I think it is more about, as Earl said, what type of match will the table promote. Will it be more interesting & more exciting & more entertaining.

I doubt that all tables will be yanked & converted to 4 pocket tables, but perhaps some might take notice & what Earl says seriously.

He probably knows more about table conditions than anyone & he knows as does CJ Wiley that something has to change if the game is going to be resuscitated back to a spectator sport & bring in some money.

I hope he wins & makes his point.
