This is correct, at least for N. Carolina.

Thank You ...

Dear Drater,

Since you are new to the poolroom business, and maybe from the Greensboro area, you may not know what good fortune you have had. Earl Strickland, love him or hate him, is one of the most feared and respected players of all time. I believe he is from Greensboro, so this may partly explain the situation. Only an idiot would charge Earl for table time. I apologize in advance, just telling you as it is, as a former room owner and pro player. I seldom got free table time, but I'm not Strickland either. If I were him I'd never set foot in your place again.

Here's a suggestion. Since BJ is himself a terrific player and your house pro, if someone's coming in that is spotting him, and definitely if you are charging a cover, you might want to at least not charge them for practice time. At the point where you are charging a cover, you are in business together.

That's over with. Now Earl can get back to doing a little gambling and this will "steel" and settle his mind which will help him get back on track to the excellence in pool that he is known for.

EARL STRICKLAND - US OPEN CHAMPION 2007.

ONE MORE TIME!!! :) :) :)

Sorry Jay & Roy. ;)

Get rid of those leg irons, Earl. You don't need them. You are FREE!

JoeyA (determined to bring Earl around) :D

Yeesh, a few of you guys can be jerks sometimes.

The guy made an honest businessman's mistake... certainly not out of malice... and you make it sound like he's some kind of jackass... like he's going out of his way to snub earl, or maybe just the biggest dummy ever.

Charging earl 12 whole effing dollars is unacceptible?! Well he makes plenty of money, and it's not gracious for any person to EXPECT a free ride automatically. The classy way to handle it is to shrug and grin and pay your money like one of the little people. If the charge leads to lost future business, he'll figure it out.

I'm a little embarrassed for this board sometimes and the way people can be treated on it. Several people are busting Drater's balls over something very minor that wasn't meant to offend, and when the guy handles it extremely well and very politely, and apologizes and offers to make amends... they STILL ride him and give him shit?! Meanwhile we're overlooking earl acting like a REAL ass by comparing him to a terrorist, I guess cuz we're used to it.

All this disrespect being thrown to Drater is a real low point for AZB and I'm glad he can fade it so well.

I agree. The poster unknown pro was a little harsh, especially after Drater said he was new, and explained he planned to make it right. In a very generous way too. I'm guessing, in a long thread like this, people don't read all posts before posting:)

I'm sure Earl isn't losing any sleep over a few bucks and I'm sure Drater's pool business acumen will grow everyday.

DRATER and some of the other AZers who posted frequently, allowed us to be there vicariously for the match and it was great fun even though I had some Crown to help me along.

Drater already has a great start and he will only get better.

He will I hope continue to post on AZ and share with us. He has won a lot of fans for his posting.
Thanks,
JoeyA

I was being hard on him. But just trying to let him know that he had a good thing going that he shouldn't screw up. People hate Earl all over, and with a lot of good reason for the way he acts a lot of times. If you want to charge him time because he's a jerk, tell him that. If you want him to play and sell tickets for it, don't charge him table time is all I'm saying. My apologies again, I was a little harsh. I shouldn't call people idiots.

Hey man, thanks for the positive support. You're right, there was never any intent to convey malice or disrespect towards Earl. Next time he or someone as well known as comes around to Shooters, pool is on me.

I don't know Earl at all. I had only been introduced to him once before this past weekend. He seems like a nice enough guy. The way he carried himself this weekend was great. Love him or hate him, he puts on a good show.

As far as fading the haters on the Internet... well, thanks for the compliment, but I've learned that in life (and the Internet) it's just easier to be honest and realize that you can never please everybody.

hey eric how did the 1 pocket tourney go? I was plannin on coming down but my buddy couldnt go and i was tired and just sat it out. I hope you will post up ur tourneys in the future, we will be coming down for 9ball tourneys if they are during the week.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, blah, blah, blah...... I might have dug up Willie Mosconi for Drater's Grand Opening and Drater might have said to Willie, "sorry, but you can't come in here dressed like that."

i have a friend who is a judge in n.c. and i personally asked him the n.c. law concerning gambling. kv is absolutely correct, as long as TWO people are betting against each other in a game of skill (pool, golf, etc...) they can legally wager anything they want. it is illegal to side bet on the match with other parties however, only head to head.

1 pocket tourney went pretty well. Only had 8 people come out to play, so it went pretty quick. The 8 that played, however, were all great players. Well, excluding myself. It'll grow over time. We paid out $140, $60, $20.

I'll have the flyers finished later tonight and will attach them to the Tournaments section here on AZB, but we'll be doing the 1 pocket tourney every Wednesday and we're going to start our regular 9 ball tournament next Thursday.

The 9 ball tourney is $15 entry and the house will add $100 if we get 20 or more players. It'll be double-elimination (race to 7, race to 5), Texas Express, and be house-handicapped.

We'll continue to add $100 on the 1 pocket tourney regardless of the number of players.

Hope to see ya next Wednesday and/or Thursday.

So if it's a ring game, head 2 head 2 head it's still legal right? Only illegal if you bet someone not playing in the game correct?
