Just in case some of you missed the charity work that Earl does it is on the main page of azbilliards. I thought with all of the heat that Earl gets maybe some should consider that he has got some other good points that are seldom talked about.

I personally like to know things like this about the different pros and wish more of this would be advertised and talked about. It takes a lot of effort and time to attend to these charities needs and Earl deserves credit for this.

Charities are a good thing. I am a Charter member of the Elizabeth Glaser
Pediatric Aids foundation. I also play allot of Shriner hall fund raisers with my band. Plus a few other local charities i help out when i can. :)
 
Good stuff, JOEYA, I was gonna post the same thing after reading about Earl's charity work. I've really gotten sick of the "gotcha" mentality prevalent in sportswriters, news-nits and (supposed) fans these days. From Michael Jordan getting rapped for LEGAL GAMBLING to sports figures and pool pros getting innuendo'd and nitpicked to death over fairly minor stuff (I'm in no way talking about Kobe Bryant-type situations here - I'm infuriated when celebs get off the hook because they're celebs). Reporting first-hand, corroborated, instances of aberrant behavior (like the Sparky Ferrell incident in another thread) is probably OK IMO, but some of the half-baked, "rumor has it" stuff I've seen about prominent players is beyond the pale. How about we celebrate our heroes' accomplishments more often and save the vitriolic diatribes for the times they are appropriate and of consequence. Earl, John, Danny, et al....there are a whole lot more of us who appreciate your talent and accomplishments than there are of those who think by tearing you down it makes them somehow more important. Personally, I'm going to hoist an adult beverage tonight in honor of the recently-maligned pool players...hope some of you will join me.
 
i think the only things anyone has ever complained about was earl's behavior in a game. i couldn't care less about his charity work, but his crass behavior with other players is what torques everyone.
 
I think its valid to both point out his poor behavior and his contributions outside of the game. Its as rare to find someone completely sinless as it is to find a totally worthless a**.
 
The stage is set for this to be Earl's year. Being the sole HOF recipient all the glory will be his alone to enjoy.

I was surprised to read all of the charities that he supports and wonder why nobody ever mentioned them before. I suppose it is just easier to criticize than to praise.
 
I'm not suprised at the charity work Earl does, during the 2001 U.S. Open 9-ball event the 9/11 attacks happened and Earl was the first to donate money and start a collection.

I think the jury is still out on exactly what this charity work entails. It surely wasn't described well.

If the charity work involves helping organize events, playing for free, contributing personal funds, participating at least yearly for a significant period of time; then that is EXTREMELY admirable.

If the charity work involves discounting your appearance fee, contributing 50cents from your pocket, or attending the charity's function once every 20 years; then it is not quite as admirable.

I am NOT impugning anyone, just making an observation. I gave 20 bucks to a local charity yesterday; but I'm not sure that qualifies me as a great humanitarian. It's all a matter of degree

P.S. - I am unaware of any pool player who in any way approaches Jeanette Lee for level of participation, contribution, and involvement in charities - she is unbelieveable (but it takes a major league time and financial commitment).

P.P.S - Congratulations to Earl. He is an extremely entertaining and skillful player - we all hope that this honor spurs him in some way to act as befits someone worthy of the honor.

My wife and I were in the hallway of the Riveria Casino an couple of years ago, playing in the National APA Team Tourney, when Earl walked up to where we were waiting for the elevator.
I told my honey that that was Earl "The Pearl", probably the best 9-Ball player in the country. I thought I had said it quietly enough to be just between us, but, Earl head the remark and said, "The best 9-Ball player in the world!" and, "Porbably the biggest p****, too." We all cracked up and had a great ride in the elevator wishing him luck and getting his autograph.

Don I think you do Earl an injustice by saying you think the jury is still out on exactly what this charity work entails.

YOu taint his poorly advertised good works even though you know nothing or have said nothing pertinent.

If you know something about Earl not performing community service then you should say and be specific. I as well as many others would love to hear it but to pop that little zinger in there is not fair play IMHO.

You can pick anything apart if you try hard enough. Just don't think you should be trying to chop up Earl's philanthropic endeavors however great or small they may be.

Jeanette is a class act anywhere she goes. George is a lucky man in more ways than one but then on the other hand I've seen George with the baby and I can say that Jeanette is a lucky lady too.

I think you misunderstood the thrust of my post (of course my 2 hours of sleep last night probably didn't help my communication skills). I tried to say specifically that I wasn't being critical of Earl(or laudatory); and I in no way meant to be critical (at least of the charity part). I was just discussing charity work IN GENERAL.

The article I read said NOTHING specific about his charity work. I mean NOTHING. There is no way anyone can applaud his efforts without knowing what they are (nor should anyone be critical either without knowing, and I'm sorry that you took it that way).

My whole point was that there are different levels of involvement with charity; some more worthwhile than others; some even not so charitable (you know, like those United Fund fundraisers that kept 85% of the funds for themselves). I was just making conversation about charity involvement, NOT about anything specific about Earl the Pearl (my mind tends to wander as age advances).

Anyway, does anyone know what Earl does for charity? I, for one, would be quite favorably impressed if his contribution is substantial.
