I was at Shannon's tourney tonight and Earl gets up to shoot his match.
He wins the first game and in the middle of the second game a Woman opens a bag of chips and starts eating them. Earl ask her to stop and she said no . He rakes the balls packs his stuff and leaves .
The buyer in the Calcutta lost there money
There was standing room only and it was by no means a "Quiet" venue.
This man needs help !!!

I had a "GOOD FRIEND" do the same thing to me in a match. I asked him to stop, he refused..I QUIT!! It is a sharking technique. I would find out who the woman was. Maybe, just maybe, she was with the opponent. I mean if a player politely ask you to stop doing something...Why would you continue doing it. Imagine if a fan was eating chips as Tiger tee'ed off. He asks her to stop and she said NO! NBC, Buick, Nike would have her shot. So no need to Earl bash here!

Sammy jones and larry nevel were practicing jump shots on another table just before this and he ask them to stop.
Earl thinks the world should stop turning while he shoots !
You had to be there to see how stupid it was ..

Garden or leaf Rake.

Seriously, Did you happen to notice what cue Earl was playing with.

I just love how, no matter what this idiot does to give pool yet another black eye, someone always jumps up to defend this jerk. The guy has ALWAYS HAD a screw loose and now that he's getting old and losing his game, he is really off his nut.

Was anyone else eating/drinking, out of curiosity?
No, but I understand there were 2 guys tongue kissing and he ask them to have some discretion and do it in private just like one would expect a hetrosexual couple to do.
Marissa you have been ask nicely to change your avatar. Please do it is not apropriate for a Billiard Forum, No matter who is kissing who. :o

The place was full yes folks were doing there thing in groups . It sounded like a packed pool hall .......

I think if a player is distracted by a member in the audience, he does have the right to ask the ref to ask this member of the audience to refrain from the distractive act. Of course, a reasonable test will apply here, that the request would have to be reasonable.

Correct me if I am wrong, if Tiger Woods is distracted by someone eating chip when he tried to tee off, and the person would not stop, I believe the official has the right to escort this person away from the tee area.

I can understand players wanting the best conditions when they play but where did most people learn to play? Probably in a pool hall or bar where it's far from quiet! Do they never learn how to block extraneous noise out?

I know it's different when there's big money or a tournament at stake but this is something that has always bugged me. I'm just glad they don't all walk out when it happens.

Don't get me wrong, the person with the chips should've at least had the courtesy to stop making the noise. You'd think fans would know better than that.

i have seen several incidences recently where a player would go off on a bystander.one thing i always notice is the player doing this is losing the match and not playing well. to this day i dont think ive ever seen the guy that was playing well and winning the match scream at a bystander.in a place such as a poolroom there is gonna be other people around socializing. ive found that the player that can block out the distractions usually wins and the one that cant usually loses. in short, there is nothing worse to me than a bad loser.

if earl cant play because one person was eating chips then i truly believe its time for him to retire.

You guys didn't know it , but it was a commercial being filmed for the potato chip company :) (Earl was the perfect fit for the character)

Y'know? :), as much as I have respect for Earl, in the sense of being a veteran pool player, but I find it kinda sad, but not suprising to hear of what Earl has been up to, which seems to be no suprise to anyone anymore :)

I will say though, that I believe that Earl was quite within his right as a player to either ask an offical or the tournament director, to ask the lady to be a little more more accomodating to the players, but at the same time, Earl has been playing long enough to know better than that, and I feel that he's let himself down yet again.

Whatever way you look at it, I believe that Earl could seriously do with taking some time out from pool completely, and then maybe come back to it, because it looks like he doesn't enjoy playing or competeing, as he expects too much not only from himself, but from everyone else too.

With being pool players yourselves, I'm sure that you all know that, when it gets to the point that it's no fun to play or compete anymore, then it's time to take a step back and try to get back to enjoying the game, but if after taking a step back or time out from competeing, and it's still no fun to play, then it's time to call it a day and just retire from competeing, because when there's no enjoyment from playing or competeing, then you're resticting your ability, and when that happens, you're just fighting a losing battle.

I have alot of respect for Earl as a player for the amount of years he's been playing and for his achievements, and so, whatever is going on with him, I hope that he can get is sorted somehow and get back to the standard that he used to play at :)

That's nuts, he's crazy, and Fleece3.. you might be a little paranoid.. lol... I doubt they sent out for the lady with chips routine on Earl..

I kind of look at it from Earls POV. The guys played at the very highest level the game has ever seen, He is used to being treated like a celeb, playing in the biggest events, and having the crowd police itself in a certain way. I'm sure He demands the very best from himself and the crowd around him. When that doesn't happen or his game is a little off.....he goes off.

I've noticed in the personalities of people who are the best at what they do a trait of not being able to tolerate sub-par performances at their chosen activity. I've noticed it in musicians, fine carpentry, pool, bowling, writers, chefs....etc. Let's face it, Earls psyche is lacking something at the moment, but he loves the game as much or more than we all do, and I can appreciate that. He also knows what its like to be the best, and now, struggle.......thats gotta suck!

It's really easy to sit and wait for Earl to go off, but if one intelligent person in the crowd would have told the lady to keep it down with the chips....you all might have gotten to see one of the best ever find a stroke and put on a clinic.....something you don't get to see every day.

Golf is a game where quiet is a reasonable expectation but I don't think that no potato chip eating is a reasonable expectation in a crowded pool hall.

Just what you have mentioned alone there Gerry is one of the reasons why I have alot of respect for Earl, as a player and athlete :), the same as I do for many of the other greats who have ever moved the rock in the blue felt jungle :)

I am wondering though that with the high level of expectancy and demand that Earl has on himself, as well as the crowd does, I'm wondering that it is is getting to the point that maybe Earl should maybe take a short break from competeing, just to try and get himself back to his best again :)

We all knmow as pool players, what Earl is capable of on the pool table, he's shown that on many occasions, and like you say, it's frustrating when going through a slump, we've all been through it, and so, here's to hoping that Earl can get through it and get back on track :)

It's all Earl

I used to read about Earl's antics all of the time on this forum...and was never quite sure why these things kept happening...but from my perspective, please do not try to support his antics or try to side with him on any specific situation until you observe him acting-up for yourself -- then you will know.

I observed him last year in person...and it was all Earl. Earl started talking with spectators -- at first just to get them into talking with him -- and eventually he started to ask them questions about his shots in an attempt to get them to say something, anything...that he could use against them and to use to get into a confrontation with them.

Earl is mentally unstable right now...IMHO...and when people try to see things from "his" perspective -- try to make excuses for him -- or try to rationalize what happened to make it seem like Earl was in the right...you really don't know how wrong you are and how messed-up Earl is right now and how 100% responsible Earl is for all of these situations.

Just stating my opinion based on my own first-hand experience. Could Earl be a good guy to chat with in the hallway, certainly, but under the pressure of playing in pool events -- forget about it...
