Early Scruggs?

I'm stumped. A buddy picked up this cue a while back and I said I would help him ID it. At first I thought..early Scruggs but then I thought maybe a early Helmsetter? The joint is a 5/16x14 with a unusual short pin. The ring work above the points, a repair at some time or someones trademark work? Lot of collectors here and figured someone will know.

Thanks Wade! I just looked at some of his other cues and you nailed it. Is the ring above the points a repair or something he did back in the day? Cool piece. Think my bud is going to be suprised. Does Mr. Blacks vintage cues have a following? Guess-i-mate at value?

I'd love to hear more about this cue. The fact that the butt sleeve rings aren't aligned & the don't match the rings above the points nor the rings at the joint is intriguing for a Black. That short pin must have been an experiment. I'd guess it was a repair as the BEM doesn't have the same character as the rest of the forearm.

I contacted Richard Black about this cue and he said it does look like his work. The ring above the points is a repair job and if I were to put money on who did the repair, I would say Timmy Scruggs. Being we are in the Baltimore area, I have owned several of Timmy's cues and it looks like his work. I'll ask him next time I see him. Guy has a memory like a elephant and remembers just about everything he touches.
