EarthQuake in the Philippines.

Glad there was no major damage.
When I first saw the title of this thread, I thought Keith was coming out of retirement. :D:D

I was in a cab when it hit, so I felt nothing. The streets are already so bumpy that a few more jiggles will never be felt. In the papers today, there were no reports of any major damage or injuries. Looks like they weathered this one without incident.

A major quake would be devastating to Manila and its confines. The homes that most of the poor people live in (the large majority of the population) are simple stucco structures with no reinforcements. They would all collapse. The people who live along the water in the bamboo structures would probably fare much better.

It is the Stucco covered Cement Block homes, most which are two stories high that I am talking about. They are in fact very reinforced. Many of these homes are in fact Owner built home. Because the Philippines has so many Earth Quakes, People are very conscience of building reinforced structures.

It is the land that is "Mahal" (very Dear or Expensive) compared to the USA. Building Materials are cheaper compared to the USA. This is the reason you see the homes so close together.

BTW Let me also add that it has been 29 years since I left the Philippines and I have not been back since.

Thanks everybody for all your concern. My country is still lucky with no severe damage on that mother nature action.
