EBONY or dyed maple?

the forearm is "ebony cored with maple"

from the pin, i see black linen phenolic with maple in the middle.

I figured as much, I have seen ebony with all kinds of grain / figure. Instead of sanding through the finish you could remove the joint collar, if you really want to know.......

Let me see if I can put your mind a little at ease, about your cue anyway.
Staining of the wood is done when the cue is at finished diameter and ready for the clear-coat. If stained while the cue was any larger than that and you'd be sanding through the stain to get to finished dia.

Now, notice the thin Tulipwood rings at the joint collar and above the wrap.
Even Houdini couldn't keep the ebony stain from migrating into those rings, (if it were stained). Ebony doesn't 'bleed', stain does.
Even with my bad eyes, those rings show very good distinction. Hence, no stain.

I'd really like to see you start enjoying your new cue & the way it plays.
If it turns out to be a great player and there is every indication that it will be, does it really matter how it got there?

you're right KJ and youve made a very good point.

i already enjoy this cue very much, i love the way it hits, and its almost won me back the money i paid for it =) (about another $100 to go)

Ebony or Curly

What kind of cue is it? McDermott made a lot of cues that were just dyed. They never claimed they were ebony but many just assumed.

I made a cue of the same wood. Did the maker mis-represent it?
It looks like Ebony to me.
