i was looking at an ebony sneaky pete.it looked dark brown and you could see grain in it.

why is other ebony i see black and solid looking?

There are many different species of ebony. Some are more black than others, some are completely brown striped. Some are white and black. They all can have streaks of brown, and even the ones you see that look black if you took a strong light to it and looked close has some color here and there.

there are also different grades of Ebony.most people think Ebony and they think black.The Gaboon Ebony is the standard black Ebony,but i think Madagascar is even blacker.anyway there are several grades of Gaboon and the top grade is mostly all black the lower grades have streaks of grey or brown and may even look just brown.
