Ed Prewitt

I haven't been able to learn much about Ed Prewitt's cue-making approach. I know he's a respected cue-maker, makes beautiful cues,
there's a long wait on new cue orders and some of his cues can be a little pricey.

Can anyone tell me more about Ed as a cue-maker. Does he do full splice cues? What distinguishes his cues from other cue-makers,
aside from the sheer design and beauty?

I know he does gorgeous ring designs and I've been told he's a perfectionist in his approach. Is he the type cue-maker that does repair
work on one of his cues even if you aren't the original owner? How approachable is he as a person and a cue-maker? For example, can
you drop by his shop to discuss a pool cue order or repair?

There's not much written or discussed about Ed as a cue-maker but I have one of his cues coming my way any time now and so I'd like
to learn more about his overall cue-making. If anyone wants to post or send me a PM, thanks for any info you might be able to share.

Ed does do his own full spice cues, I got mine in June.

Asides from being a established cue maker, Ed is often described as a master machinist (he was a good machinist long before he started making cues). Those two roles combined, Ed is capable of very high precision works. I know little about cue making, even less about being a machinist, but I do appreciate his precision work on his cues I've owned (currently own 3). I am not surprised at all that Ed is praised for being a perfectionist on his works, his cues tell it.

Ed builds gorgeous looking cues, nicely designed, and well finished, and most importantly to me, his cues play superb. Of all cues I have owned and tried in years, I like my Prewitt cues (previous main player, and now my new full spice) best, they are the best playing cues IMO.

I know for sure Ed will do repair works even if you are not the original owner. From personal experience, he is quite approachable both as a person and a cue maker. Ed is not really a people person as far as I know, sometimes introvert you can say, but he is a really really nice person to be with. The problem I would say, is reaching him, he runs a one-man shop, does all the work on his own, therefore he is always extremely busy, getting him to reply e-mail or phone call can be a bit challenging sometimes, you need to be patient.

As for dropping by his shop and discuss an order in person, I know Ed wants to keep this kind of "shop tour" to minimum, and reason is apparent, he's too busy to accommodate appointments like this, but it does happens once a while, maybe several times a year. The most recent one that I know of was a guy wanting to order a really fancy, pricy cue, Ed gave him a small tour of the shop. I don't mean in any way at all that Ed treats pricy cues' build differently, just when it comes to visiting the shop, you know, that's an incentive...heehee

Congrats on your coming cue, I am confident you will find it a good purchase.

Oh by the way, a while ago a friend told me something interesting... the Lucky-san in Japan, now he doesn't let go cues from 3 makers, Gina, Searing and Prewitt. I don't know how authentic this is, believe it, or don't, doesn't matter to me. But even this is made up, it tells something about how Prewitt cues are highly sought after nowadays. For me personally, tried Gina(s), tried Searing(s), tried South West(s), sold my South West(s), now I stay with Prewitt. Ed's cues are this good TO ME, this is subjective of course.

Ed is a master machinist and brilliant inventive guy. He has designed and manufactured cue making machinery and other items. I'm happy to call him a friend and business associate. His cues show that extra 5% effort that only a small percentage of cuemakers bother with. He is very fussy and selective when it comes to woods, etc. There are methods of his cue construction that I would not discuss or reveal on a forum. The architecture and style of his cues greatly appeal to me. I've had other cues that were close to but not better in playability than my current Braz RW Titlist Hoppe Ed made for me 4-5 years ago. It's one cue that I won't part unless I was offered many times what I paid for it.
Ed does not want anyone dropping by the shop. If you don't call first for an appointment you likely won't get a response at the door. There is over a 3 year wait now on Eds cues. I consider his more recent cues, last 5 years, to be his best. The older cues likely have a super stiff Taiwanese taper that I don't like.

Steve......thanks for the explanation about his cues and Martin, I look on your website all the time....naturally hoping an RP cue might be available.
And your remarks and opinion on EP cues are also just as meaningful for me to read.

The one heading my way is just a dandy, although cuenoisseur and I still have a deal for his EP whenever he's able to visit the USA. His cue is my all
time favorite EP cue so if he's reading this, we still have a purchase pending.... "ad infinitem" as far as I'm concerned.

I wasn't intending to drop by his shop in Santa Monica and ask "Is Ed around?" Heck no, I'm presumptuous to some degree but not to the extent that
I'd be that disrespectful of his time. I'm thinking I'd like to have another shaft or two made to match my cue. I'd rather drive a few hundred miles to
see him on a pre-arranged visit rather than pick up the phone and send him one of the shafts to match or macro photos of the collars. The joint should
be relatively easy since it's a 3/8x10 flat ivory joint.

Anyway, not knowing much about Ed Prewitt and since finding any information is difficult because it's so scant, I looked to the Forum for some assistance.
Thanks for chiming in because I wasn't sure where to look for information about his pool cues. And I just learned this cue also has original, brown Morri Tips.

After Ed started making full splice cues I ordered a braz/braz with some classic inlays and Ed's unique rings. After a few emails and phone calls Ed said he knew exactly what look I wanted and how it would play. I was a little skeptical of that statement but when the cue arrived I was overjoyed at the result. Exactly what i wanted. Thanks Ed.

Impatience Is My Downfall

Phil, if I'm not mistaken, I think Martin also owns a dandy EP cue too.

At my age, finding a cue with my specs happens few and far between.
In the last 3 years on the Forum, I've only seen one EP with my specs.

Even though I still submit custom made the way you like 'em is better,
I don't want to invest 3-4 years waiting. I heard Hercek is now 11 yrs.
Rest assured, I'd never order a new Hercek, ergo, the resale market.

And when you do that, you settle for someone else's cue specs...no choice.
So the one coming is not to my specs but I can live with the difference.
I want 18.25-18.5 and this one is 18.8 but the butt is 14.6 which is great.
It should help lighten the feel and the shafts are 13mm but I prefer 12.7mm.

So I'm settling for a cue I'd prefer to have been made with different specs.
Every time you buy a pre-owned cue, used or new, that's what happens.
But I don't want to wait, the specs are really close, and it's a dandy of a cue.

I still submit having a custom cue tailor made to your specs is the very best.
Reality says you have to indulge the wait for some cue-makers you want.
Absent that, then go buy a cue in the resale market and hope for the best.

All in all, the cue doesn't make any of us a better player of and by itself.
Maybe it makes us try harder because we know what a great cue we own.
We can blame poor play on lots of things but never on a custom made cue.

According To Mr. Grassley

Bill and I have been discussing a couple of cues. I asked him when did Ed make this cue since it's not dated and I can't tell from the design. He said 2004/2005 is the most likely period and also that's it's been a long time since Ed released a new cue, probably due to his other business vocation.
