Legendary pool player Efren “Bata” Reyes underwent refractive surgery in what eye specialist Dr. Arnold Salud described as “lasik procedure,” which was done by Dr. Jack Arroyo of the American Eye Center — regarded as the preeminent eye institute in the country.
Good luck to Efren.
I'm having his best friend call him today to check how he's doing.

Thanks

Keep us posted as I'm sure you will. Best wishes to Eferen with his eye surgery.

Thanks for the news Joey. Do you think he'll recover in time to play at the WPA World 8ball Championships in UAE? If it's simply Lasik surgery, his recovery time should be pretty fast. Like I said before, scary to think what Efren is capable of doing with a "normal" set of eyes now.

I wish Efren a speedy and complete recovery. Hopefully he'll have 20 year old eyes again! Pair that with all the knowledge he's gained over the years and I'll really don't see how anybody's gonna beat him...

i had lasik last year and found that it affected my potting as the depth perception is different.. there is also a slight halo effect... Took me 6 months to get used to it.. but still nothing beats not needing classes to play pool ..guess Efren will take some time to adjust :)

How much does lasik cost these days??

I have one eye that sees better than the other....does the proceedure even them out??? If so..what would the affects be after 20+ years of miss-matched vision???

I think you should just get a monocle! Monocle's are cool!

The procedure could even them out or not even them out. Some people actually DON'T have them evened out in order that they can read better up close with a slightly weaker eye. (but not much)

The affects after 20+ years of mismatched vision would be that you could see a hell of a lot better than you did for the last 20 years and continue to for the rest of your life.

Btw, I had Radial Keratanomy done back in '96.
Yup, the old knife in your eyes method.
The post-op was painful. My vision was a mess for months. The doctor and his crew lied to me and to everyone else for that matter. They painted blues skies on everyone ( you'd be playing golf within a week, bullcrap ).
My left eye is 20-20 and my right eye is at 20-40. But, I have contrast problems and still have some halo effect.
The Lasik procedure is much better than the old method.
I have a monovision. My left eye is my distance eye but it's terrible for reading.

The roto-zip method only runs 29.95 per eye in Tijuana.

Great!!....That means I would have a bunch of money left over for Tecate and Table Dances.........Oh wait...I am married.....Nevermind.... :(

Don't worry. The strippers don't care if you're married as long as you keep buying lapdances.

Sorry to read about your problems.
I had Lasik done in '01 and have had almost zero problems. Even from the start I had very few side effects and they lasted only a short time.
My eyes do get tired now late at night but I dont know if that is from
the procedure or just from age, etc.

My only real gripe is trivial. My right eye is about 20/30 or so but my left is
20/15 -20/20. The docs said that they could adjust my right one but that
for most people its not even noticeable. Due to pool I can notice the difference.
I am very happy with the outcome. I recommend the procedure but for homework to be completed. I knew that I was a very good candidate. If not or even borderlline I would not have done the procedure.
I also did not BARGAINSHOP with my vision. I found the guy that I wanted and paid him. It was expensive but I wanted a good Doc.

Hopefully Efren's vision will return very well. Do you know how bad it was?
Lat time he was at HTs I heard a couple people talking about it and they were saying that he could not focus in at all and that he could not see any edges.

I had the PRK method - they burned off my epithilium layer and then did the refraction correction. The difference with Lasic is that they just cut a flap in the epithilium to do the refraction correction and then put the flap back and it heals in place. My procedure was done about 8 years ago and it was one of the best things I've ever done. My eyes were horrible before the procedure. Since that procedure was done, my eyes have declined a little and I have to wear glasses again but they're nothing like the coke bottles I used to wear.

I'm sure that when Efren gets accustomed to his new and improved vision he will be back on top of the pool world again.

I had lasik done on both eyes. My left eye was done to focus at about three feet for seeing the cue ball clearly. My right eye was done to focus most clearly at about twelve feet to give me the a clear view of the object ball even if it is at the far end of the table. It worked out great. For three years now I have not had to wear glasses and I am completely adjusted to monovision. Monovision means one eye is done for close up and the other eye for distance. After a while, your brain automatically uses the correct eye depending on the need, It's a little annoying at first, but eventually becomes automatic.

I saw Efren last night at a stag derby here in Dumaguete and he's wearing a protective googles. Now I know why he's wearing it. He lasted only about four fights just to promote his exhibition match here in our place.

Without glasses/contacts, i can't see anything clear more than a foot away.
I also have astigmatism in both eyes.
Would i be a good candidate? :D

Go for the wavefront guided lasik, its more expensive but more accurate. Both the older lasik and wavefront guided methods use a logarithm to calculate the amount of cornea to zap away. The older method measures the curvature of the external surface of the cornea but wavefront guided measures light wave that has been refracted and reflected off the retina and eyeball so its that much more accurate.
But like has been said above, do your homework. There's a loss in quality/contrast after lasik and for some the halo effect does not go away, and yet others have recurrence of astigmatism/myopia etc... but after all has been said and done I think it's the best invention since sliced bread especially for people who have been wearing glasses all their lives

Hello jsp, he played in Dumaguete City (Philippines) and i saw him wearing a protective eyewear (looks more like a sport eyewear) before the tournament of 9-Ball against the local bets here together with Gandy Valle and Rudolfo Luat. But during the practice time and the tournament proper he took off his glasses. And boy he sure still can play without those glasses...he whip the 2 local boys here with the score of 9-3 and 9-1 (actually it should have been 9-0) respectively, the latter one beats Gande Valle 9-8 on a hill-hill match.

So the one who comes out on the final is Luat and Efren.
Luat race right away to 3-0 before Efren could make a 1 frame.
Then 4-1 for Luat, 4-2, 5-2, 5-3 and then 6-3...But then
Efren hit his own gas pedal racking 3 straight one tying the score to 6-6 all.
Then Efren make a not so good safety then Luat using the rail
in the middle bank the ball and makes it 7-6 with Luat to break.
He then clean the rack for 8-6...And when Efren's turn came in
he miss the 3 ball in the lower rail...and that's it 9-6 the final score.
But boy, Efren playes in a more speedy way, than i most saw him.
and not to take anything Luat, he (Luat) just play a very consistent and
serious pool not even to mention how solid he plays that time.

The tournament in dumaguete have a crowd of between 900 to 1,000 people watching the tournament from 7pm to 12:15 in the midnight.
Just some info.
I have my pictures and video on my phone, but i dont have means yet
to transfer it to a local pc. :D
