Thank you Mr Ninoy for your informative post. Many Filipino's have been named on several posts but one of my favorites is Ramil Gallego. I think if he left the Phillipines and made a commitment to come here and play in all the tournaments he would be one of the greats. I saw him play 9 ball and just destroyed his opponents in California.
As far as respect goes some people dont know how to and is a reflection on their own respect for themselves. Efren is a true Hall of Famer and a master of the game. When we talk of all around there is no other like him. Rotation, 9 ball, 8 ball, one pocket, Billiards, snooker, Balkline, he masters all. Some of us dont deserve to even mention his name with such irreverence. This man has given us so much and has taught us new ways to look at the game. When someone refers to him as an "old fart" he is obvious ignorant of the kind of respect, particularly Asians, given to those of superior stature like Efren. Besides the only thing that resembles a "fart" is the smell of the post that mentions it.

:D i really laugh at the last line...the "fart" thing...lol

Yap sorry that i forgot to mention Ramil Gallego...he is one of
the great player here in the Philippines too...that's why i have
just to include "many, many others"...
From where i came from, here in Cebu, there are many good players that could came up with any of them although many of them are now getting
old or have been a victim to vices..We have here "Paklay" and
"Sernic" this is efren's contemporary...the former for a long time dominated
the pool here in Cebu..we have also "Boy kilid", "Akil", "Boy sweepstakes"
who i heard before during efren's hey days..could give a run for his money
and skills wise they are very close...but unfortunately he was dead already..
What we have right now, who is playing in international seen who is
coming from Cebu, is Warren Kiamco...very good player too..

Efren's not passing the torch just yet.
He's still lightin' up people in flames.
I don't think anyone will be ever show cueball control like Efren has.
If Efren had a good 9-ball break, he'd totally dominate the 9-ball scene.

Yap i agree with you Bay (buddy). Even with his age right now Efren
still dominates. And if efren has a good 9-ball break like busta, i
just don't know if anyone would like to play him anymore.
However, with this great skills comes the reality that sooner
father time could catch up with him. In one of his interview he
says he has 5 years or more to go, in playing very active pool.
And of course he knows himself very well.

Diri lang kutob sa, maayong adlaw Joseph.
(Just here as of the moment, Good day Joseph.)

If he'd be passing it (just for argument's sake), I'd like to see Ronnie Alcano receiving it :)

That's one of the problem on this passing the torch thing..there are
too many of them...as far as filipino pool players is concern :D

However as i've said a few postings ago that the silent majority here in
the philippines has eyes on django as the one who shall receive
that torch...in fact even parica is obviously implying that in his
recent interview with BD(Billiard's Digest). And if you see the
WPC on previous years, the side commentaries keep on saying
that the next guy who will light that torch would be django.
And not to belittle Ronnie in comparison to django, i think he has
a lot more to prove in terms of accomplishments and experience.
Additionally for me the guy whom i believe could be one of the great
next filipino pool player , is Marlon Manalo...his shotmaking is very
good...as well as ball control...and he was once a champion of
snooker beating the world champion then...and that shows versatility
on his part..Once this guy got sponsors and will be expose to many
international plays..i think this is a guy to beat..in fact the last
the WPC as far as i could remember he figured very very well.

Well, with his recent wins at the DCC and the 1st leg of the Asian 9ball, it appears Efren's not about to pass the torch just yet. Still, the rest of the Filipino campaigners need to step up a bit if they want to carry on his legacy. It's good that the likes of Kiamco and Corteza are seeing international action, though. That's the only way to improve their games.
On another note, it seems Santos Sambajon and Jose Parica have been receiving a lot of good press lately. I hope some of the billiards magazines do a feature on all the filipino players actively playing in international tournaments so we'll get to know them more.

Hey CebuanoNiNoy,

Since you seem to know a lot about all of the Philippino players, one person's name whom I haven't seen mentioned is Leonardo Andam. That guy is incredible. I know that he played for a brief time on the US tour in the early '90s, and I saw him play last year in a regional tournament near Washington DC and just totally dominate the field (and the field included Jose Parica, Ramil Gallego, Amar Kang, Gerry Slivka, Dick Lane, Keith McCready, and many other great players).

Has Andam given up on pool? I think that he is one of the very best Philippinos, and he is still young.

Very Filipino..
He and his family migrated when he was a little younger to Canada.
So that's why he carries the canada flag when playing
on international level like WPC.

Here's an article of Filipino Pool players from
Easy pool tutor.

I saw Laeonardo Andam played Efren in one San Miguel final in the Philippines, Andam dominated Efren. He just won't missed ,Efren, who is always in his good mood, just shake his head and never stops smiling. He just can't believe this guy. I almost forgot about him until now. I hope he still plays.

Andam is still playing in the Philippines. I saw him last July playing a money match with Chamat. I guess the reason why Andam hasn't been having much exposure anymore is because of his consistency.

I enjoyed watching Ronnie Alcano, Efren, Django, Ramil, and the rest of the Pinoys play at the Trump 10 ball tourney in Atlantic City. Hey CebuanoNinoy, have you heard anything about Ronnie? I haven't heard much from him...as far as tournaments. Salamat pare (thank you friend) for the posts. Keep us updated.

Andam comes into my local pool room once in a while. I was there one time and he was giving anyone who wanted to play the 7 and the break for fifty dollars! One by one he crushed everyone, but a top stick in our room wanted to play him for $100! He beat Andam and the place went nuts!

Ronnie is certainly qualified to receive the torch. However, I am surprised that no one has mentioned the great Phillipino Antonio Lining. Antonio plays mostly in Asia (Japan, specifically). Here is a player that GIVES Busta a spot when playing rotation.

What kind of spot does he give Busta? I've heard
that Lining is a great money player, we just don't
get to see him in the U.S.

One of the younger Filipino pool heroes is Snooky Villanueva. He was a medalist in the last Asian Games but I haven't seen him in any of the pro tournaments. How about Santos Sambajon? I think he's pinoy (colloquial term for Filipino) as well.

When players start spotting Efren, and winning the cash, I still won't believe it. It will only happen when he puts down his cue. Twenty years from now, Efren will still be playing, not as good as now maybe, but people will be saying how great he was twenty years ago. And he will still be taking home the money.
