POOL MAESTRO Efren "Bata" Reyes defends his crown against a star-studded cast of challengers led by new American pool hero Shane Van Boening when the 2008 Derby City Classic gets underway on Jan. 4 to 8, 2008 in Louisville, Kentucky.
The 53-year-old Reyes, top campaigner of Puyat Sports, earned $20,000 by winning the Derby City Classic Master of the Table bonus.
Completing a 1-2-3 finish for the Philippines in last year's edition were Rodolfo "Boy Samson" Luat and Francisco "Django" Bustamante.
"The Derby City Classic will be my first event abroad in 2008 and I will do my very best for flag and country," said Reyes, who is grieving the death of his older brother Fermin on Thursday night, in Filipino.
Reyes, the 1999 Cardiff World Pool champion, ruled the Derby City Classic One Pocket Event crown and emerged runner-up in the Derby City Classic bank pool event.
Acknowledged Philippine pool godfather Aristeo "Putch" Puyat said he is hopeful that Reyes will perform well in the Derby City Classic, which normally draws a field as tough as the US Open 9-ball.
Reyes will leave the country on Jan. 2 along with Bustamante and reigning National Open champion Lee Vann Corteza of the Negros Billiard Stable.
Meanwhile, Reyes ranked 13th in this year's Player Money List after earning $54,355. Van Boening took the top spot with $106,307.
Reyes, the 2005 and 2006 Player Money List topnotcher, said he failed to win a major event this year because of arthritis. Reyes added that he also took part in fewer tournaments.
