Efren Reyes in the 1990s vs Current SVB

There are many guys in their prime that would best Shane in 9 ball. I say 9 ball because that is kind of all we have to go by.

Earl
Buddy
Keith
Fransisco
Mike
Ralph
Johnny
I'm sure several of the much older guys

And I don't think Shane has to like playing Corey when he was dominate either

the truth is... Dennis is the best in the world right now and that's no knock to Shane

these days rotation games are about magic racks and making the dead balls. whoever breaks them wide open and gets a shot on the one more often wins. efren never had anywhere close to the biggest break in his day but still dominated the game. i heard shane beat efren playing 10 ball in the phillipines, and efren offered to play him again with busty breaking for him. shane said to play that game he would need a spot, and this is like maybe 2 years ago. just shows that even shane doesnt have delusions about being able to out move efren.

Question is was the 90's really Efren's prime?

In terms of success eighties and nineties - it's when he was most feared by other players, because before then he was an unknown factor in the U.S. It would be hard to believe he only started travelling when he was already (slightly, of course) past his prime, but according to himself, he played best in the seventies. But looking back, aren't we all going to say that about our younger selves at some point?

During the 80's and 90's Reyes was the greatest player on the planet, unless SVB became the greatest player on the planet now, then we have a match up. Until then, no.

I can't believe there is even a thread about this. In a long race like that of the TCOM match, I don't even see SVB doing as good as Earl did.

I must say, Earl should have won that match though, his attitude got in the way again. But all around, there is no one as good as Efren in his prime.

Even if one said ok, Buddy was as good at gambling 9 ball (or better), let him play Efren one pocket, rotation, straight pool, bank pool etc............

This is easily solved when big money is involved. Who come away with the cash in the IPT?

Who's better? I saw SVB play some near perfect pool at the SBE. Sure, he's not the fanciest kid on the block unlike Efren, but I would say his consistency with Cue ball control and shotmaking may be even better than efren in his era of dominance in the 1990s. Who do you think would win if they had a race to 13 in 10-ball right now?

I agree with all SVB today is a better or equal player than most top Philippino players, but for some reason he keep loosing to them, maybe he is under estimating them, i understand when he travel overseas he becomes exhausted and maybe lack of sleep does it, but not sure why he loose to them in the US. Could it be they are more hungry for $$$$..

Simply put, there's a reason why, when someone starts a thread using the match-up of their dreams (or someone else's) as the title, such a match-up is always going to read "Efren Reyes vs […]" - when we're daydreaming, it's easy to see why it's his name who inevitably pops up in our mind first.

Houston 1985

1985, Houston:
-Some say Efren's camp decided it was best to let Buddy win so they could leave with the $.
-Some say Efren's play was notably worse during his session with Buddy as a result of fatigue.
-Some say Buddy beat his azzzzzzzzz.

I say one can't formulate a trend from one event.

Amen to that, brother!! Walt, I'll give you the skinny on Houston straight from the horse's mouth...
