Efren vs. Jose

seems to me that overall playing ability can't be judged by 1 set of anything. let them play long sets of 8-ball, 9-ball, 10-ball, 15-ball rotation, one pocket, banks, 3-cushion and any other pool game you can think of and give us all the videos. then we can be the real winners of that matchup. Both are great players and a plethera of knowledge. sam

Oh I don't think you can ever say "never" in this game. Jose and Efren are much closer in skill level than you think.

Hi Rickw,

I was speaking strictly, that no matter what Jose does, he will never be Efren. He is an individual, as Efren is. He can beat him, look like him, act like him, etc. He will always be Jose! Thats all I meant. People appear to want him to be something more than he can be.

I saw Jose standing by himself at the DCC. Across the room, Efren, Santo and other Pinoys sat talking with other players. Jose looked so sad. Like he didn't belong anymore. I rarely see him with the others. Has he be ostracized from his community?

I'm sorry Cardiac. I misread your post. I thought you meant "beat" him. I understand what you're saying now and I have to agree with you. Efren does seem to be well-liked by all of the Pinoys and the young players. Jose does always seem to be aloof and lonely by comparison.

Although I really do not know that much about them, I'm sure that there must be cliques among Philippinos in pool. Incidentally, last February when all the Philippinos were hanging out in the northeast waiting for that 10-ball tournament in Atlantic City, Efren, Ronnie Alcano, Santos, and Bustamante were playing in the Philly area, while Parica, Ramil Gallego, and Leonardo Andam were playing in the DC area. It almost seems as if they all got together beforehand to divide and conquer.

I have heard that the Pinoy do view Jose as a bit of an outsider these days.

He told me himself that he lives in CA now and has not been to the Phillipines in 10+ years.

Who knows? He is ARGUABLY the best in the world, but DEFINITELY in the top 5 (even in NC!!).

I understand that Parica was the Fillipino champion before Efren, and came to the US first and was amazing - very popular at The Hardtimes. Last year at Hollywood Billiards in LA, Efren sent Parica to the losers bracket easily only to have to play him in a return final match where Parica beat Efren handily. Like on any given day either can win. Parica is approachable, is candid and speaks English very well. When asked to practice with some of the people at Gardena Bowl he said that practice is for those that don't know what they are doing. When he was the Player of the Year he said that he started to practice and that that helped - go figure.
