Eight Ball Breaks

Hey all,

I recently changed my 8 ball break and I am seeing something I didn't think could be happening. I am placing the cue ball just above the head string and one diamond from the center. If the rack is "tilted" in one direction, I break from that side for a fuller hit. I am hitting the rack square with about 1/2 tip low. I have also increased my break speed.

The 8 ball is moving toward the corner pocket I am breaking from, but more importantly the cue ball is ending up mid table.

Why do I bring this up? This weeknd I ended up with 2 eight ball breaks and nearly made it 4 times. This was on different tables.

What's odd about this is that I think I have made 4 eight ball breaks in my life before this weekend.

I love the way my OB Break hits, but I think it's loving me back :)

It's nice to see the results of your hard work isnt it. Two years ago at the end of league I took inventory of my game and the one thing that stood out the most was my weak break. So I decided to dedicate my time to improving it. I checked out this video, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MB705q8EwBg , and practiced it religiously until I had it down.

I went from 0 8-ball breaks to 7 8-ball breaks in one 12 session winning the competition for most 8-balls on the break. And even when I don't make the 8-ball I usually get a corner ball in and get decent shape.:thumbup::thumbup:

Newstroke- That seems very similar to my break, CB placement and all. Curious though, how were you breaking before? Also kind of off topic, but have you used any other break cues? How do they compare to the OB in your opinion, Ive been testing some out.

I just to break just off center and then about 1/2 diamond in and 1 diamond up. I broke softer as well because I was losing my cue ball (I was hitting downward on the ball).

I have used 5280, Scorpion and Predator. IMO, none of them hit as solid as the OB Break.

8 on the break is spotted in my independent league, but this is some good info for any other time. Cdryden, that video was especially helpful. I've always been told about the second ball break, but the visual really helps. I'm a visual learner.

I actually would rather the 8 NOT move to the pockets because it it almost goes in, it ends up a nasty blocker that can be tough to clear. Plus not all rules allow for 8 on the break as a win. Heck in some places people say 8 on the break is a loss.

Look for a space on the right or left of the 8ball. If you do see a space (i.e. the balls aren't locked) break from the opposite side of the space and hit the second ball as solid as you can with some draw.

I did not read the other posts so I am just giving you my take on 8b breaks. If you break from the side rail on the second ball and draw the cb to the side rail you will make more 8 on the breaks and most of the time you will make a ball, the downside is it is harder to break and run because you dont get the ball separation that you get from breaking on the head ball .
