El Centro Cal place to play?

I was stationed in El Centro in 1976. I loved it!

There's not much in the way of poolhalls, but if you look around, you can find tables in various places. I was a Dental Tech and lived in the hospital on base where they had a pretty nice old Brunswick in the duty room. I played racquetball at Jacques and Jills downtown and they had one. Later, Valley Racqetball opened and they had a couple. There were also a few playable tables in the local bars. I used to play on a table at a little bar in Seeley, which is right outside El Centro.

I was raised in Phoenix, which is a sizable city, and so I enjoyed the small town stuff. It seemed like there was always a baseball or softball game. They had an Over the Line tournament while I was there that I thought was interesting. It had one of the first cardrooms I ever played in at the Owl Cafe, which I'm sure is still there after thirty + years. I'm also a hunter and there were lots of things to hunt.

The people were friendly back then and had carne asada barbeques going virtually every weekend. The food was really good at several of the local "hole in the walls". There was a place out on Highway 111 called The El Tiki that had excellent Mexican food with a Hawaiian theme. What more can you ask for?

You are close to Alpine and Ramona which are nice areas. As was previously mentioned, the WPBA has a tournament in Alpine coming up. You are also close to San Diego, Palm Springs, Yuma, etc.

When I went to El Centro, I had just got back from Iceland, though, so I might have just been happy to get back to the desert!

Good luck!

Hunter,

I have been to the pub in Seeley, I think the name of it was the DC Pub and there was two pool table in the back area, but that wasnt the reason to go there. They used to have a rule that you can write your name on the ceiling if you can climb up the rafters, oh yeah,,,you werent allowed to wear clothes. A lot of women have there names up there, but unfortunately I have heard the place has closed down.

Back in 95 when I went down on det for a couple of weeks I stayed in a barracks that had two gold crowns, but of coarse, the tables were really abused and just not worth playing on. It always amazes me at how pool tables get abused and how non pool players dont understand the value of a table. Our bowling alley on base had 6 nice Gold Crowns that they removed and put in a play area for kids. Come to find out they sold each table for $20 each and all you had to do is break them down and move them out. I was on deployment at the time and almost cried when I got home and found out what a deal I missed.
