Most intrigued by the elephant skin wrap. Is this common? Is there a reason for it? How do azers feel about this?

Is it ever a good idea to ask how the majority of azers feel about anything? Prepare yourself for a sh@tstorm of misery.

On a serious note, the wrap sounds pretty awesome.

Ummmm, are the elephants aware this happening? If I were an elephant I would be pretty pissed off!! I think there are other things that are better suited for a cue wrap. Try burlap, it doesn't hurt the elephant as much.

Depends which part of the world you are from.

Although I've been too lazy to do it, I have for a while now meant to start a thread on what materials are used in the production of pool cues and equipment. It's bewildering. Spend some time in the For Sale section and you'll see virtually everything animal, vegetable or mineral used in making a piece of wood slightly more bling.

Is it really elephant ear or just leather with an imprint?

I'm also surprised to see so much ivory bling. The guitar makers had to quit using ivory long ago.

I have elephant ear on both my Ginas. It's beautiful and has a wonderful texture. It does take some getting use to because it's a little rough, at almost a microscopic level. To give you an idea -- when the wrap is new you would not want to have the wrap brush across a silk shirt or it'll catch a bit.

It's a bit rough. Is it common? More common than stingray and kangaroo, but less common than calfskin.

I think the rough texture is unique for leather wrap lovers.

Are you asking how for a "how can you do that to an animal?" point of view? I think that one goes hand-in-hand with the question of ivory. I'm fine with it, if it's done through legal means and through government-sanctioned culling processes.

Freddie <~~~ no leather no cry

TBH I'm surprised Daz cares about his wrap. I'll have to take note of how he plays but most British players tend to play with their back hands at the end of the cue, making a wrap pointless. (They are pointless anyway, aren't they?)

Well we use pig for tips, cow for wraps, water buffalo for tips, shark for wraps, lizard for wrap, alligator for cases, cow for cases, buffalo for cases, elephant for ivory, elephant for wraps, deer for joints, ferrules, butt caps, as well as all other antlered animals for joint material, hippo tusk, warthog tusk, walrus tusk, etc.....etc.....etc......what does everyone want to use for tips, wraps and cases now????

I don't have an opinion one way or another about the use of Elephants ears as a wrap. Mostly just curious.

For those without access to Crassbook:

What ever creams your twinkie I guess, it doesn't matter to me as long as its legal.
But it really does surprise me that it is legal, given the hubbub about ivory. Go figure.

I was just reading the other day, an article from about 1910 or so, stating that 45,000 elephants per year were being axed for pool balls . And that was just for Brunswick. That's baffling. No wonder there aren't many left ...sheesh.

The mention of elephant ears always makes me smile....
...because of an old joke.

A man goes to a restaurant where the claim they will make ANYTHING
you order....so the guy orders an elephant ear sandwich...
...the waiter comes back and says.......
"I'm sorry sir....we're out of bread."

...carry on...:)

pt..likes Irish linen, cork, or wrapless

I am both an animal lover and a conservationist, but I'd have an elephant ear wrap on my cue in a heartbeat if my cue was ear-worthy. The stuff comes from legally culled elephants, and every part of such a magnificent animal who must meet it's demise out of necessity should be used without reservation.

When too many elephants occupy too little land, they not only face starvation, they encroach upon villages in the vicinity, destroying crops and endangering humans. There is little choice but to cull the herd to a sustainable size. This is not the same as poaching, which removes large numbers of animals indiscriminately.

Elephant ear leather is a fantastic material. Not only does it have a handsome texture, the feel in the hand is like no other. Every time I pick up a fine cue with an elephant wrap, I feel the urge to go hit some with it. It just feels good in my hand. Most of the stuff goes to belts, wallets, boots, etc. where it has little use except for looks. On a cue it has both beauty and function in its favor, so this is probably the very best use for such a precious and disappearing resource.
