Last weekend, the $4,000-added Pennsylvania State 9-Ball Championship slipped under the radar screen; intentionally or unintentionally :p, due to lack of advertising. I know for a fact that nobody in my neck of the woods knew about it. On a scale of current tournament payouts, those are fairly decent added monies.

I usually find out about upcoming events from the Internet, pool print media, word of mouth, direct mail and/or fliers, in no particular order.

Going to the Main Page, I copy-and-pasted these events happening this weekend: Saturday, June 11, and Sunday, June 12.

If there are any other happenings this weekend, aside from Reno, of course, please add to this thread. Weekend tournaments, no matter how big or small, is a way to keep in stroke. When New Yorker Frankie Hernandez asked WPBA Champion Karen Corr why she liked playing in the Joss Northeast 9-Ball Tour, she quickly replied that it keeps her skills sharp and she likes the competition, which ultimately strengthens her game.

Here's some upcoming events. Maybe you'll see something that catches your interest or is close by to where you live. Please add any tournament or event for this weekend that may be missing, or maybe you're already planning on going to one of the below-referenced.

Snooker's in Providence, Rhode Island [GREAT PLACE] is holding a one-day season qualifier on Sunday, June 12th, for the $25,000-added Joss Season Finale.

If any of you are attending one of the above-referenced and would like to hook up with another AzB forum member, let us know. If you're going out this weekend to practice or play, maybe you'd like to post a where-and-when. You just might get played! :D ;)

Thanks for the recap, JAM...this added promotion is a good thing. Nothing in this neck of the woods that I know of.

Between the Tyson fight in Atlantic City and the Belmont Championship, I'm pretty sure I know what I'll be doing. However, the PGA Booz-Allen Golf Championship is only a 10-minute drive from my home, and I may end up sitting on a real field of green right at the 18th hole this Sunday. :p

JAM - I'm as Irish as Paddy's Pig and I hate the way I think this next Tyson fiasco is going to turn out. This big Irish bloke is just a rung on the Tyson ladder. I'll be damned if I'm going to pay $44.95 to see the enevitable - BUT - If you do, PLEASE LET ME KNOW A.S.A.P.
I wonder what the Vegas Line is on this fight?

Odds as of this time:

Mike Tyson is the favorite at -800, and Kevin McBride is the dog in the fight at +500.

At the weigh-in, McBride towered over a very slim-and-trim Tyson, and McBride has an 11-inch reach over Mike's. Tyson is 38 now and is going up against a 32-year-old. Personally, I don't think Tyson is a shoe-in, but the Irish guy had a little fat on his beefed-up body, with Tyson looking like he was all muscle with zero body fat.

The over/under round props:
Over 2.5 (-125)
Under 2.5 (-115)

Tyson said he's in better shape than he's ever been in his life, working out for 11 weeks before this fight. I predict Tyson will begin the fight swinging, but if he can't knock down McBride, I sure do hope the Irishman wears some ear muffs.

Tyson is getting $5 million for just showing up, win or lose, and this fight isn't even for a championship title.

At 38 years of age, he may be nearing the end of his boxing career, but wherever Mike Tyson shows up, he seems to draw a huge crowd because nobody knows what to expect. If Tyson can't hold his own with the giant Irishman, I hope he doesn't bite McBride's ear a la Holyfield. I am leaning towards placing a small sweat bet on McBride because I like the odds. With the 11-inch reach over Tyson and the height and youth, I do not believe Tyson can get there, especially if it goes the distance.

Who do you like in the Belmont?

Seriously - I always bet on the 3rd favorite in the morning line. I bet to w/p/s and You wouldn't believe how much I've made over the years in Vegas while playing video poker w/ my wife at a casino book.

Tyson has been the reach underdog in every fight. Even in his prime. I dont see that affecting him that much. If he truely has been working out for
11 weeks then he will kill the guy. 5-1 is not enough for me to bet and laying 8-1 surely wont get me to bet on a guy that could DQ himself.
Key Afleet Alex in the top 3 in a Trifecta wager and hope for a long shot with him or make a few Tri wagers with the others with AA not in the top 3.
The good thing about these big races is that even if the favorites come in
theres enough bets made that the payout is still positive. AA is the stud in the field.
As for win tickets the middle range long shots would pay enough to take a shot at a couple. You have two Zito horses at 20-1 and a Lucas at 20-1.
I will bet that the track record is safe. Secretariat tore it up way back.

Looks like a good all-button ticket, with Afleet Alex on top. ;)

Afleet Alex/ALL/ALL for the cheese!

However, with Afleet Alex being the No. 9 horse, I'm betting a dollar-triple-box, 1/2/9. Six bucks for the win. :p

He's 6 to 1 on the morning line. He came in second last time he ran. Good luck, OHB!

I'm still sticking with my 1-2-9, dollar-triple-box, but I might make a small wager on the 8 to place. Remember Afleet Aflex tripped in the home stretch last time, but managed to gain his balance and win. I think he's going to go the distance and win by as far as you can hit a golf ball! :p

I am thinking 9-5-2-7 I probably would box them. However I would have to
look at the handle for the day. If AA does not win the payday will be much better and betting on the others to win might not be a bad wager.
I like Giacomo (5) and Andromeda's Hero(7) to win if AA does not. I would have to sweat OHB's pick then.
My buddy wants to key Afleet Alex with alls but I am not sure I will bet.
I have been trying to figure some reasonable bets with AA not in the top 3.
Thats where the money is at.

Well, as it turned out, the 9 horse, Afleet Alex, won it by a mile, and the triple was 9/7/1. A 9/ALL/ALL paid $1,200 and some change for the triple! :D

Now I'm getting ready to sweat the Tyson match!

Great Saturday, all in all! :)

funny you mentioned Mike Tyson. it was just on the espn news that he quit on his stool after the 6th round. failed to come out for the 7th so it is a 6th round tko. and he said that he just does not have the heart for it anymore and that he does not want to disgrace boxing anymore....good luck mike....you should have gone back to your former trainer Kevin Rooney alot sooner.......................................................MIKE

It was difficult seeing Mike Tyson just plain quit after the 6th round. He deliberately head-butted Kevin McBride, trying to get an unfair advantage.

The media states Tyson was nervous coming to the boxing ring, even though he had prepared for this fight and said he was in the best shape of his boxing career.

I am saddened to see Tyson or any previous champion throw in the white towel. IMO, he should have continued the fight to the end. Unless a referee stops the fight, Tyson quitting is like seeing a pool player unscrew their stick mid-match.

Having said that, though, Mike Tyson received $5 million just for showing up. As the years go by, he will be remembered as a great boxing champion, controversial, but one that kept folks on the edge of their seats.

George Foreman seemed to be able to capitalize on his boxing career when he retired. Mike Tyson now has a nice bank roll to enter his "twilight years" at 38 years old. :D

In today's pool world, the top prize is a title belt, a trophy, and $30,000 for first place is a huge payout in some circles. If a pool player doesn't have any other means of income when they grow old, they have nothing to look forward to but poverty, poor health with no medical insurance, and many times are often forgotten, until they pass. Pool is cruel to its own, and many of its own don't have the foresight, the monies, or the fortitude to change. It is the nature of pool, not a very good prognosis for a lucrative career, but those who hang in there do so because it is a labor of love.

Mike Tyson bites the dust, but he does so with very full pockets, hopefully with a good sum of monies after he pays his creditors. I hear he owes big time. :p

First, The Bad News...........

JAM - I did as I said I would do.

#1 - Played (a true sucker) 1 game of Gin on GameColony.com for $200. I had to keep a table open for over 2 hours for the right opponent to show up.

#2 - Bet $50 across on Reverberate. Still Running!

#3 - Bet an additional $50 (w/ the same bookie) on Kevin McBride at 6.5-1.

BOTTOM LINE (AS USUAL) - I would have done as well or better if I had stayed at the pool hall and - BET ON MYSELF.

A copy of this should be made and posted over on the aging thread about pro players. This hits the nail on the head...you know it...I know it...we all know it...we all just hate talking the truth and some of the tragedies that go along with it. In the mean time...let the good times roll.

Glad to see you won some money on the race, if you placed your bet in time.
Goin' to the golf tournament today? Congressional CC is BEAUTIFUL!!

We were going to head on over there, but to tell you the truth, I just got back from walking my dog down at Rock Creek Park and it is very BUGGY and MUGGY. So I guess we'll enjoy watching the 18th hole from my living room in the comfort of air-conditioning. :p

BUT - The same could be said for professional - Chess, Ping pong, canasta, bingo, handball, badminton, etc., etc. PLAYERS AS WELL!
They are all "Pastime Games for entertainment".

At some point, a pool player has to make a conscious decision to peruse a professional pool career. (I was 28). It is their choice to make. As it is and always has been, Pool is not at the level where it should be and also (as it is), should not be perused as a viable vocation for ANYONE WITH ANY OF LIFE'S NORMAL RESPONSIBILITIES.

This may sound foolish coming from me - but I honestly believe this and have always preached this to MY KIDS.

$ MAKES THE WORLD GO ROUND - GET SOME!
And then - If you want to play games - Go For It!

I don't regret my decision to HUSTLE POOL for an income while I was young and had no real responsibilities - But - I also know and appreciate that I wasn't the normal or average pool player trying to be the best. Trophies & admiration (from my peers) always meant less than nothing to me. For me - It was always all about "The Hustle & The Ca$h". Those days and possibilities are over, and I think the only hope for our game (other than the love and appreciation we have for it) is for it to become an entertainment venue and the money from major sponsorships.
