To all of you ready to jump in SVB's shit...try winning 5 U.S. Open titles and earning six-figure incomes from pro pool every year for the past 10 years before you run your mouth.

The man is human.
He feels pressure.
His right arm gets wobbly just like yours in $20 events!

You think those misses won't haunt him for months or even years? The Internet certainly won't let him forget!

Yes I am a fan and yes, we can all criticize the elites, but the blatant disrespect needs to stop. SVB is one of our own and should be treated like the champion that he is.

Stop with the BS about how he should be off the team...WTF?

He's already a great in the pool world. But maybe he is not good enough to play in the Mosconi Cup. Some idiots will criticise him unfairly because of this. This should not change your opinion of him. But those who say he should be off the team have an opinion that is pretty valid if the evidence is considered.

I am not disputing that, and I agree that his Mosconi Cup performance has been sub-par to date, but the disrespect is what I won't tolerate.

I'm a huge SVB fan.
He should definitely be on the team.
Respectful criticism is valid.
Just because someone hasn't done what he has, doesn't mean they can't criticize him.

If winning the Mosconi Cup is something people in the U.S. want to do, Shane's record at the MC is relevant.

He has played in many cups, and his performance is simply not good enough to win. In my view, he has earned his way off the team. It is not disrespectful to point out objectively poor performance.

I am not saying he should not be criticized, I am saying he should not be disrespected. There is a huge difference.

Shane's like Alex Rodriguez used to be in the postseason. Great in the "regular season", but not so great in games that (for Yankees fans or Mosconi Cup fans) matter the most.

Kind of a funny coincidence that both Shane and Alex had one great exception to their "postseason" flops----funny in that they both came in 2009. I only hope Shane can rack up a few more Mosconi Cup MVPs before he has to call it a day.

And no, while he's dogged it repeatedly in the MC since then, I wouldn't take him off the team. It's not as if we've got a whole lot of other MC players who've lately been doing much better for more than a few games at a time. We're just going to have to live with the fact that the Europeans react to MC pressure much better than the Americans do.

He should take a break from this event. Doesn't matter how good he is it's time for him to step aside. This isn't working for him or his team. I will be surprised if he doesn't at this point.

With him gone others won't be waiting on their "best player" to do something and will step up. JMO

Shane has played in the Mosconi Cup for 11 years now, 2007-2017.

Team USA's record in matches won and lost over that 11-year period:
  • singles -- 33-64 (winning percentage of 34%)
    doubles -- 32-46 (41%)
    teams -- 4-7 (36%)
    total -- 69-117 (37%)

Shane's record over that 11-year period:
  • singles -- 11-16 (41%)
    doubles -- 11-17 (39%)
    teams -- 4-7 (36%)
    total -- 26-40 (39%)

Team USA's match record over that 11-year period excluding Shane's matches:
  • singles -- 22-48 (31%)
    doubles -- 21-29 (42%)

So, looking at matches in which Shane played vs. those in which he did not play, Shane has done better in singles (41% vs. 31%) than his teammates and slightly worse in doubles (39% vs. 42%).

If we count a full point for a win or loss in singles matches, half a point for a win or loss in doubles matches, and one-fifth of a point for a win or loss in the teams matches, we have a measure of the overall contribution of a player to the match scores:

Team USA matches won and lost over that 11-year period -- 69-117 (37% winning percentage)
Shane's contribution -- 17.3-25.9 (40%)
Team USA other than Shane -- 51.7-91.1 (36%)

Some people just aren't as mentally and emotionally involved in team play as they are individual play.

I think Shane my be one of those people.

He excels when he has nobody to worry about, except himself. Maybe the play of the other team members distracts him from his game and he feels he is seen as the "work horse" who must make up for the rest of the team and that causes his play to suffer in return.

Who knows?

All I know is I think he may be the favorite in any match, with almost anybody, in a long race for the money.

It's hard to play when your team has little chance when you play your best, and has no chance if you play one hair below your best. It's hard to look good fighting a losing battle.
