hey guys,
just recieved some informations and invitations about the 8 ball and 10 ball world championships and it says that seeded players have to play 200$ in 8 ball and 250$ in 10 ball entry fee. its the first time for me in the past 5 years to pay an entry fee for a world championship.
funny thing is that the qualifiers are only 100$, and (of course) there is less prizemoney then usual, lol
AND NO, you are not autamatically in the money!
what do you guys think about it??
do you think its the right way to do it??

if invited to a World Champ to Play

Hummmm, lets think about this... for anyone that is good enough to play in a world championship and is invited but has to pay the entry fee, So what....
Take the opportunity, and quite thinking about it. I have 8 more yrs to prepare myself to play in the US open for my 40th birthday present to myself. I know alot of pros, but my want is to say I got to play against some of the best, and it doesn't matter how I finish, and yes I will have to fork up the 500-600-700 for the entry fee then... so what difference does it make. Unless you are not confident enough in playing?

lets say this, Give me your invitation! I will pay the entry fee, and give you $100?

@ flash
nice point of view, but its like changing the subject. of course im glad to get an ivitation, but its not like im getting a wildcard. u can be sure, i have to play many many tough tournaments for the whole year to qualify ;-)
obviously its nice to play a wc and play the best in the world... but im just asking what you guys think about it, cause its a step back!! in previous years it was never like that... in matchroom events like the masters or the world cup you even get paied to take part. know what i mean?

You're missing the point. World Championships is not an open tournament. You can't just sign up and play. If you get to play in those, you must have deserved it somehow, either by your previous results, status in the game, etc. You shouldn't have to pay entry fee, even if it is just 1$.

Do players who get to play in the Mosconi Cup pay entry fee? Certainly not.

And yes Stoj, it is a serious step backwards. Sorry to hear that.

Seeing everyone's point of view

I agree with everyone's point, and I am just envious that you all have an opportunity to play in such events. Think about it, sure the past was an invite and you go and play because of your tenure and performance. However, things are changing and you could miss out on a great tournament from a personal performance. I would say that the entry fee is cheap and if it was $500 or more then that is something to really think about. I am sure you would have more $$ riding on a match when playing anyway. My regards, and Best of Luck!

as far as I understood from the press-release, it is NOT invitational really..not by organizers anyway....rather by the couple of federations involved..

access to the tournament is through

WPA Ranking
or
Continental organization (ie. EPBF for Europe)
or
One of the qualifiers (10 in total..all played in Manila just before main event)
or
Wild Card

From previous tournaments I seem to remember that last 5 World Champions would for example be invited (under Wild Cards I suppose).
Another point that I wonder is the fact that WPA recently changed the quantity of tournaments and selection of tournaments considered when building World Rankings...and as a result players like Mika Immonen dropped way down on the list to somewhere around #30 or so....
