Now that's a brain fart. Years back when I played in a bar league for a short while, I ran out only to leave the 5 ball in the table. Usually after a break I know were every ball is on the table by memory. I thought it was the 5 that dropped on the break, but was the 13. Even though I looked at the table after the break, my mind would not recognize the 5 for some reason.

We've all been there ! As Pete Lafond said, there's a word for it and that's a brainfart (etymology unknown). I've shot a 3 in with 2 on the table. I've come to the table after my opponents dry break, measuring angles some time and picking up the cueball like it was ball in hand. I've dropped my chalk on top of the balls -> foul. Boy, did I feel dumb on every occasion...
But I've never used any other ball as a cueball. I think that thing will change once my vision goes down with the age.

I knocked the 7 in and got distracted right after that...got down on the shot and calmly drilled in the 8 with the 9 ball because the white ass end of it was staring at me and the way it was situated I never noticed the yellow until too late.
Now I could say that was the dumbest ass thing I ever did, but the dumbest ass thing was when I did it a second time a number of years later...and the absolute dumbest thing I ever did was when I did it a third time a good number of years after that!!! Thank God for the measles ball.

Wouldn't your aiming techniques make this impossible?
I think I've done this only twice, so I'm 2/3 the dumbass you are.

I still can't believe this. I'm looking right at what I typed and know it happened. It is not like I've never played the wrong ball before, but this. Most everyone has played the wrong ball when you were shooting a group on one end of the table then when the opponents says, 'What are you doing?', you look up at the other end and see a ball you skipped. But this! The first one I did on Sunday - it was my break and I made a ball on the break, went over to get my shooting cue, walked back to the table and played the 2 in the corner. The one ball was maybe 5 inches away from dead center of the table! How do you do this? Of course the last one is the one that bewilders me the most. How can you shoot the 6 ball and play position on the 5? The only thing I can figure is that when warming up before the tournament I was fooling around playing a friend. We were not playing seriously at all. No safeties .... laughing...etc. I don't think I'll do that again.
