I don't believe it matters which alcohol you use. Brite tone is .004 at the joint and thicker further down. How thick? Not sure. I put about 10-12 coats on and sand it as little as I can to make it smooth and shiny. It's only at the mandrels at the joint where I bother to quantify it's thickness.

Thanks JC that helps alot.
 
So would that mean you start with .832 at joint and end up with .840 for a .840 joint? Hence .004 thick,
