Espn shows too many women's matches and not enough men's.

They also put pool matches on that are years old when they could show new ones.

the women are eye candy, and that's why they get more play. the men?,,,,,,,,,,,,,they're time filler.

I like the women....but he is right about espn. On the sunshine channel here in florida the show a feed from the Billiard Channel I guess. It is reruns of the 2002 I think U S Open. ESPN should take some tippers from the way The Billiard Channel shows a match. You get to see every game...........you see a whole match......and one of the best commentators for pool ( Grady )!..........just an all around better presentation of pool.

i never liked any pool on epsn, looks unproffesional and frankly i don't like the commentating, they're quite boring

The WPBA US Open 9-Ball was in Sandia Casino in NM on Sept 11-15 and they ran the Semi-Final starring Vivian Villarreal and Ga Young Kim last week. I hope they run the final this week. That is about as current as they ever have been.

Evidently the ratings just are not there. If people don't care to watch pool on TV why should the stations broadcast them?

Probably the majority of posters on these boards don't bother to watch them and I believe that 90% of the pool playing public either don't know about the telecasts, or if they do they don't watch them.

And I doubt that 1% of the non-pool playing public bother to watch a match.

Ever see a bar or pool room telecast a pool match? Not a chance, everyone is either watching race cars or football or basketball or baseball.

Id like to see the us-open shown on espn and other world class tournamests, the best one on tv is the challenge of champions and the seven ball shoot out

i'd say worse. i'd say less than 1% of anyone who plays even on a social basis(ie, your weekend crowd and league players) know about any pool telecasts. and they couldn't name two, maybe one, men pros.

Right now, I think one of the most popular players is Jeanette Lee. Most people know or have heard of the "Black Widow". If you ask someone on the street who Earl Strickland or Johnny Archer is, I doubt they'd know who they are.

That is because of her TV appearances on NON pool related shows. More people have seen her on the manshow and other cameos she has done.....not for the titles she has won. Not to take away from her game, but thats why people would no her.

I agree with you PTM but there's this sleazy thing called "marketing" and that's what Jeanette has been a part of. If she was ugly and fat, no one would know her name either.

Well, we all know what Jeanette Lee's selling and it sure aint pool.

i used to search pool on tv but now i just lost interest, and everytime i see pool on tv by accident i watch it even though i'm watching something else...it's not often that they telecast tournaments. Plus the poolhall here, if there is a tournament being telecast of course and it only makes sense that they show it on their big screen tv, but i wouldn't know if they would do it if the World series is on or stanley cup.

I'd really like it if they'd put the big matches on pay-per-view. I'd rather watch that than the same ols heavyweights over and over.

90% of the pool playing public do not even play 9 ball. Now if they showed 8 Ball you would have some interest.

If your showing 9 ball you may as well be showing snooker, it's a completly different game.

Kieth? I agree with your first paragraph..........but more than 10% of people play 9 ball! More people know what 9 ball is than 8 ball or snooker combined. The problem is that they show pool at 1pm in the afternoon here......and late at night. That is if they do show it.........and forget any advertising of when it's on.

Where I live, in Winnipeg Manitoba, Canada, the population is about 675,000.

Now I would say that at one point or another at least 100,000 of these people have played "pool".

I would very much doubt that out of these 100,000 , 10% have played 9 ball.

That would mean that out of every 100,000 players at least 10,000 have played 9 ball.

All I am saying is for pool to have half a chance of becoming popular enough to show on t.v. , they should show the "type" of pool that is played the most.

8-ball? Hell, 90% of the people don't even know the rules of 8-ball.:D
Let's just face it, when ESPN's tv guide shows Billiards but they're showing Bowling, pool has gone to the gutter.
We have Don Mackey to thank for that. The year after ESPN showed the US Open finals LIVE, the men's tour was no longer shown by ESPN. Instead it was on Prime Ticket by delay.
Mackey tough talked ESPN and ESPN didn't bite.
The men's tour needs an OWNERSHIP. Just like Pro Bowlers' Association has a new owner who knows how to promote it, pool needs a new OWNER.
Maybe Bill Gates's old partner can buy the Pro Tour too.

My bad Kieth...did see ya was from Canada. I believe that about Canada.....but here in Florida, like Joe said ....your lucky if 10% of the people know the rules of 8 ball. Hell....your lucky if you find 3 people that know the same rules of 8 ball....lol!

Im not a big fan of ESPNs current matchplay but man I have some old matches I taped off of ESPN back in the late 80's and early 90's that are great in my opinion, Miz and Sigel and Hopkins doing commentary with the players miked so you can hear them complaining about the rolls and whatnot! Great stuff.
