Etiquette Anyone?

What would you do?
In-house 8 ball league - opponent's shot, he plucks a ball from a pocket and slides it between the rail and my object ball to see if his cue ball will clear for a shot down the rail. I know this is probably not a foul but jeeze, is this proper pool etiquette?

35 years ago this was common practice in bars and pool rooms. In straight pool, lots of people used the rack to see if a break ball was good.

Was your opponent an older gentleman?

As long as he didn't move any balls, I don't see anything wrong with it. If he could do it then you can too.

Now today with cue ball in hand I've used the cue ball to check in tight spaces.

check again

Just checked Vnea and BCAPL NO REFERENCE to using a pocketed ball to measure.

From the BCA-PL rule book.

2012-2014 Player Handbook BCA Pool League
1-3 Use of Equipment

g. You may only use your vision to judge whether the cue ball or an object ball would fit through a gap, or to judge what ball the cue ball would contact first. You may not use any ball, cue, rack, or any other equipment or other part of your body as a width-measuring device. (AR p. 73).
Penalty for (f-g): Foul immediately upon the violation, regardless of whether a shot is executed.

I defiantly have different book. Mine must be abridged. I got it with all score sheets and marker. I've seen it done a hundred times. I missed all those ball in hand.

Forgot this was a foul, d'oh. I see it done all the time.
If it's a foul, then of course the other guy deserves your scorn.
Players gotta know the rules.

Strictly as a question of 'etiquette' or 'courtesy' though, no, it bothers me about as much as seeing some guy walk over to the pocket, kneel, and squint through one eye (so, not at all). And as Baxter says, it's a sucker shot. I'd totally encourage them to do this.

What If...

Not trying to hijack but knowing you can't use a ball to measure, what if the person has BIH and announces to you that they're not placing the cue but want to see if a ball will pass?

Had this happen last week - I said you can't use the ball to measure but he said he could because he had BIH.

Thoughts?
