You guys ever out run the NUTS? I think most of us have at one time or another. I have out run-um quite a few times. The time I remember most was at a joint called the Pumping Station in Fat City, New Orleans.
In the mid 70s Bill Stack and I were trying to pump up there. Bill was playing a guy named Vester Baker for $20 a game. I was playing anyone who challenged the table next to him. Bill was up pretty good on Vester and I was holding the table, 8 ball, at $5 a pop. I ran all the local idiots off and a guy puts up his quarters up, yea plural, Fat City was the first place in the south to go from .25 to .50 a game.
I am sweating Bill’s, now $40 action, on the next table and not paying much attention to the $5 player I am playing. My guy racks the balls, I break and run out. I’m not going to stall on any of the guys I’m playing, I just want to get what ever cash I can. My guy racks again and again I break and run out. It is the 4th game before my guy gets to hit a ball. He runs a few balls, misses and I run out. This goes on for 7 straight games and he pulls up and sits down at the bar. Stack wins a game and while Vester is racking the balls he comes over to me and says, “How much did you lose to that Little David?” I looked at him and said, “Little Who?” Stack tells me that was David Howard and if he pulled up playing me he must be broke and that I should go over and give him his money back. He asked how much I had won? I told him $35. Stack assured me, David, was broke and to give the money back. I did as Stack suggested. I told, David, he had been knocked and handed him $35. David did a double take. I told him Stack and I were in together and he figured you were broke. David said in fact he was broke. He said he had tapped out playing Earl Heisler one pocket and was just trying to pump back up and that he appreciated it.
Yes, you could surely say I out ran the nuts and Stack beat Vester out of about $800 so the pain of giving the $35 back didn’t hurt quite so bad. That's mine. Your turn.
