Everyone says pool is dying... My question for you guys..

stronger math and science programs in schools = increase in intellectual curiosity and well-ordered thinking = increase in pools popularity among kids and teens = better, smarter, more disciplined pool players = pool again thriving in America.

To get away from the "Get off my lawn" crowd's disdain for video games for a moment and back to the OP's original point I don't think the game is too hard to learn the basics of. Yeah progressing to getting good it at takes a lot of work, but so does almost anything else. Pool is no different. I don't think people get upset when they can't run out and give up. I think the problem is they never cared about running out or really even making shots that much in the first place. I think this is mostly because they don't see it as legitimate sport or competition. The reason for that is rooted in pool's distant past when they stopped reporting it on the sports pages, and I'm not sure it will ever be correctable.

pool has ALWAYS had the same level of difficulty yet it was popular before.....

Times have changed, pool hasnt changed

This is one of the smartest and most realistic quotes I've ever read here. The short, simple truth. Now, the question is, can we really change time? Can we overwrite the effect science, new technologies and modern ideas had on this world. Pool has always been a part of the world. And now the world is changing, and pool isn't. Who is here to blame? Time? Or is it the pool community which still sticks to the old ways even if they've been destructive for decades? We can't stop time. Sometimes it's a nice fantasy, but it's not possible. We know what happened to everything which couldn't follow the changes in the world itself. Those who weren't ready for evolution faced extinction. We read about those things in history books, see them in museums. Is this where this game is headed?

Pool can and will exist for a long time, no need to worry about that. But not in the same form. Evolution already hit this game. From the age of big tables, huge pool halls, hustlers and the golden times of professional pool we moved to the era of bars, hordes of bangers, low quality bar boxes, broken tradition, pool as a game instead of a sport, and also to the strong league play and large numbers of recreational players. It's not glorious as before, but it developed a new form suited for surviving and thriving in these new conditions. The fact is, all that we invest in pool now will pay off twice as much in the next golden age. But I'm not talking about investments in the already dying professional pool and the old pool halls. We need to do our best to attract more and more players into the game. We need NUMBERS. Doesn't matter if they're all bangers. People now don't even bother learning, you all said it yourself. But if we keep the practice of playing pool regularly popular among the masses, maybe, one day, if the situation changes again, we're going to have a gigantic base of potential players which could be drawn into higher, more advanced layers of the game.
