Is Evgeny Stalev still in the USA? I haven't heard of him in any major tournaments lately. He seems to have disappeared.

I think Stalev was in the states temporailry.
I heard storys back in 1995 when he won 9 Ball Poland Open about him being sponsored by Russian mafia. Don't know how much of that was true.

Stalev tried to qualify for the World Pool Championships in Taiwan last month but was unsuccessful in earning a spot, despite playing in several qualifiers.

FYI, pool is a massive sport in Russia, besides their own game called russian pyramid. The truth is that all pool rooms are owned by mafia. There are rooms with over 100 tables in Moscow and St. Petersburg and many friends of mine have visited there in big tournaments and I've been told all foreign guests are being treated like kings there.

Have to add that pool is played in major cities, I doubt smaller ones (poorer ones) don't have decent pool rooms at all...
