Hi Mr. Webb -
How Can you tell the diffrenace Between real Skin and embosed leather !
I have a black lizard skin on my cue and someone said it might not be real skin. It costed me 250. to be put on . If it is real skin how can i condition it to keep it in good shape .

Thank you Sir
I keep all the prices on my repair page of my site. Take a look if you like and we can talk privately when your ready. I'm thinking about elephant again but I haven't had the extra time to skive it properly. I saw some at the show but I didn't like they way they shaved it.

Good Morning:
The dollar amount seems correct for Lizard, Send me a picture to webbcues@cox.net and I'll try my best for you. I only use real Lizard, I have seen what's offered in the synthetic and it really looks fake to me so I won't use it. Leather wraps are not suppose to look shinny like vinyl, their suppose to look like leather. The only thing I use on my leather wraps is mink oil. I use a paper towel, rub it in and buff it out. A little goes a long way. I wish I could tell you a way to tell for yourself, but it's really one of those working experience things. Sorry about that.
I will also be in Albany the weekend of April 22, if you feel like a short drive for the Joss event at The Golden Cue. I could check it there if you like.

Hi, Mike. Koop introduced us at VF. Thanks for all the advice you give out on here. I know it's hard to tell from a picture, but what do you think of the wraps on the top two cues in this picture - real or no? Both have that shiny finish. Thanks.

The top one looks like textured leather and the second one looks like real lizard to me.

Based on makers of these cues, I hope/think you are right, Z-man. Thanks.

Sometimes it's nice having adobe C/S
Top to bottom,
Pig skin
Real Lizard
Tiger stack
Black and white Linen.

I think/hope you are right because I bought them with the understanding of those wraps. You scared me with the observation about "shiny" leather.

Some of the leather installers use a sealer on their leather wraps similar to a shaft sealer. I choose not to because of locations and humidity, some time the sealer feels quite sticky when humidity is higher. I just like the feel of leather. The shinny imitation I was talking about is real shinny and just looks fake.

i used to be very enanmored by exotic wraps and leathers as, playing in a highly humid country the wrap.. in the website that i wrote and has yet to be uploaded (too lazy) i had a section on wrap care so i will included hope it helps...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Real" Leather ( Cowhide) Wraps

From Cows obviously...Not the synthetic type which are typically shimmy... i think the best test to real leather would still be the a small flame over it... but many shudder at the thought .. A good choice for wraps and cases

Texture
Coarse, Thick, Dull looking.

Care
Try common leather lotion (for cars).. to extend the life, and keep it supple, use mink oil.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pigskin

Farm pigs, or hogs like peccary wild boars and brazillian rodents called carpindos. not to be be confused with pigskin printed leather... which is stamp printed cowhide...

Texture
Resembles cowhide but pigskin has more small visible pores and are mainly used in sport shoes, wallets, big bags and belts.. nice feel like leather..

Care
As per cowhide.. slight bemishes can be cleaned off with pencil eraser (havent try that..) especially on whiter skins.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Snakeskin
From Pythons usually of the brownish orange or white varieties. Rattlesnakes and a sea snake call Karung are used extensively on philippines cues..with a clearcoat.. More commonly on cases..

Texture
Pythons has Distinctive Diamond Markings.

Care
Usually dryer than cowhide and has a irregular surface... Use a conditioner like Coach Leather Conditioner to prevent splittings. Use thin coats as it has poor absorbent layers.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Lizard Skin (ringtail, black/brown lizard etc)

From Ringtail lizards, black lizards..couple of species are used... even crocs and aligator skins fall into the lizard catagory, but are more ex. wraps and cases

Texture
intricate lines and horned texture. Hands down as the best of exotics wraps..

Care
Bally Fine Leather Oil Lotion cleans especially well on reptile skins.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Ostrich Skin
The only bird to provide leather.. superior strength and elasticity, as soft as a buck skin. wraps and cases

Texture
Supple, unique grain and resembles a plucked bird. Craggy and pockmarked look.

Care
Does not crack or flake easily so no attention needed.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Galuchat
aka stingray. extremely resistant to wear and tear. i ever had a mottey wraped with stingray b4 and i dont recommend it as the the thickness is uneven.. and the feel is too *****y...keke

Texture
jewel like patterned with bulbous nature.

Care
Little maintenance.. occasional swipe with a rag will do.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Suede
underside of mammal skins such as pigskins.. for cases

Texture
flurry and soft

Care
Vulnerable to tears and stains.. be warned..

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please differential between leather prints and the real thing... Obviously if u have a lizard print leather wrap, u should follow the procedure for leather..

Some of the above materials are only made in cases and not cues.. for certain reasons which the cuemakers would be best to answer...

You must be referring to Kalabukab and they're not exactly sea snakes but mistaken to be as they are mostly caught while raiding the fingerlings in the fishpens(fresh water). The elongated scale pattern in their belly is so patterned for traction while slithering.
