Explain this gambling term

That's correct.
If the next ball in order is lined up for an easy combo on the 9 and my chances of making a legal hit on the next ball in order are remote but I can see the 9 I'm going to hit the 9 away or pocket it and give ball in hand to my opponent.
Your wisdom does not fall on deaf ears.
Thank you.

Thank you for this topic, I always wondered how this principle worked exactly. Here in the Netherlands, I never saw or heard of a game of 9ball being played like this, I guess it's typically an American thing.

Its called ACTION my friend. In any poolroom you have players of un-equal ability. Giving up a 'spot' or 'weight' is often the only way to 'stir the pot', to get action started. There are MANY different ways to do this: giving ball spots, the break, balls and the break, games on the wire. You name it, its been done.

And handicaps at billiards are very, very old. One of the first books in English about billiards included extensive tables of proper betting odds at various scores for games that were handicapped and in progress. That was over two hundred years ago. An example would be if the score was 7-3 in a match where the players were going to 12-8, the correct odds for a new bet at that time might be 2:1. Oh I saw and heard of this 'action'-thing of course, people do play for money in the Netherlands. Not as much as in the US (by a long shot, is my impression) but they do. The only way of giving up weight we see here, is games on the wire, I think. Or sometimes giving up the break.

Lot of really good players there from what i hear. Mark B. is a really good player that has gambled in Vegas some.

You're not even attempting to write Bijsterbosch? ;) He's grown to be a great player, I think the best since the Feijen / Lely / van den Berg / Dikx generation of the 90s. Since then some dutchies have emerged on the international stage, but never as successful. Mark got the farthest.

I played quite a bit in the Netherlands in the 90s and they seemed to have no problem asking for weight when I was there. You are right though, for the most part they didn't gamble that much.

Not like Germans who were real suckers. Over the years though they have got smarter. They didn't seem to know what a pool hustler was.

What's the consensus on the following:

"A" offers "B" the 7 ball. "A" breaks and runs to the three, realizes the 4 and 5 are tied up, so he takes a foul and pockets the 7 ball. What happens now?
When I play, all money balls are treated like the 9-ball. If made illegally, the 7-ball spots.
