Extended Pushrod/Plunger for Taig Tailstock?

Is anyone else like me and wish the pushrod on the Taig tailstock was longer?

I use the tailstock and drill bits to step-drill the initial hole in a shaft or butt for the pin, then I finish up with a boring bar to make sure I have a true hole.
I standardize on 3/8-10 modified pins. The taps I have are not bottom taps, so I have to drill a little deeper than the thread depth to get the hole threaded deep enough. I am constantly having to reset the tailstock closer to get the last 1/2 inch or 3/4 inch of depth. So I figure the pushrod needs to be 3/4" longer.

I don't have the tools to make one myself, so I thought I'd ask if anyone has done this before or if they'd like to take this on as a project. I doubt that I'm unique in this need, so maybe you could make a few and sell them here to make the effort worth your while.

Let me know here or by PM what you would charge for this.

Thanks!
Gary

If im not mistaken Hightower has a tail stock like a metal lathe. More extention, look under Deluxe lathe optionds toward the bottom of page.

Tailstock

If someone out there decides to make a few of these I would be interested in one also (as long as the price isn't outrageous)

Get Hightower's and you'll never go back. Much higher accuracy. Not as fast as plunge drilling but it has 2" of travel with a graduated scale. Have you ever had your drill bit grab while plunge drilling and go tearing into your wood? Not any more.

I got mine when he first started selling them and haven't used the plunge one since except as an offset live center. It's really worth the money.

This is one that I made a while back, has 41mm of travel. It does need Nitriding though.
With a longer handle and pivot point a longer stroke could be made.
There are lots of ways of preventing the lever operated tailstocks from jumping in. But I have not found it to be much of an issue.
