Extension bumper security

Escott Cues
I just made my first extension. Took it out for a test run last night and had an issue. Put it on and off a couple of times and then the bumper unscrewed out of the cue instead of the extension out of the bumper. The friction of the rubber is gripping more than the bumper threads in the wood of the cue.

I am thinking I will need to use locktite on the threads so it can counter the torque of the extension. Even though I put weight bolt threads into the cue I doubt I would ever put any in. But I don’t want to do any permanent damage to it with the bumper which is why I am thinking locktite.

Any advice?

Scott

I am not a cuemaker. Would something like a dab of rubber cement work? I'd recommend silicone but you don't really want that around anywhere you finish cues. You could also use a spot of hot glue, it will readily release with IPA in the future.

Hopefully some cue makers will have an idea but that's what comes to mind.

First you know that the bumper has a hex head that needs to be tightened once the bumper is installed...right? Careful not to over tighten it and strip it...don't ask...lol

Secondly you need to make sure you made the hole wide enough that it's not too tight grabbing the rubber of the bumper.

Thanks and yes I do know about the hex. One of the first problems I had was the metal doesn’t touch the cue first, the bottom of the bumper does. When I tighten it down the bottom of the rubber would squirt out from being pinched between the cue and the metal. I tried to solve it with a washer a little thicker than the lip of the bumper. This may have worked if I hadn’t chamfered the hole in the cue originally for the longer version.

I put the longer one in and it stops just short so it isn’t pinching the bumper, but I can tighten it down pretty snug. I tried it a bunch of times and it seems to be working. I will keep an Allen wrench in my bag so I don’t have to play the whole night without a bumper again.

I guess the washer and no chamfer might be the way for the shorter one. Has no one else had this issue?

Cut the diameter of the rubber bumper down a little, or bore the extension ID out. The rubber grabbing the ID of the extension is almost always what causes this.
Thanks but that wasn’t the issue. The sides of the bumper had enough clearance. The issue was not being able to tighten without the bottom of the bumper squeezing out leaving it too loose.

I bought 6 bumper/adapters (3/8 x16 various types) from cuefits. Put them in my cues and use the same extension for all. Didnt notice any unscrewing but didnt really check. They do have different size bumpers. I use the smaller ones on my cues that were bumperless. You can buy just the rubber bumper separately fairly cheap

Can you use something like this for a SchonView attachment 782634
You could, but not without doing something like I showed above first. The bumper would mostly disappear into the buttcap. Also, those bumpers have no shoulder for the rubber, and if you don't bore the depth very precisely so that it tightens at the bottom near the threads, you end up tightening on the rubber which is the exact problem the OP had.

Benson rebuild. I made a new buttcap that threaded onto the handle. Weight bolts are still accessible.
The predator style bumpers are what I prefer, I wish the threads were a little different though. Ideally, 1/2-13
