It looks to me like a lot of them are quilted maple - is that true?

The perfect segue.

Gary, I believe what you meant to say was 'Curly Maple' as Quilt Maple is very soft.
Maybe I'm not getting a good picture but those almost look like router/machine marks rather than figure.
Look closer. Your eyes are probably much better than mine anyway.

You must have a special connection, that grade is way more expensive.
I would not buy a tip pad from JB anyway.

Actually, if you use the 200 times maginfier on IE8, they look like threaded dowels:) I think it's just a low res picture issue, not curly or quilted, IMO.

Another rookie mistake on my part - will it never end? :D

I do need to get some new shaft stock in, but not so many and there doesn't seem to be anyone else close by to split a shipment with.

I would second the request for some better/more pictures.
