Failure as A Team Captain

what would you have done?

Explain to him his selfishness has cost him his spot on the team. Your team doesn't need self centered hooligans. If he wants to still remain on the team he will start remembering its a team and you're captain for a reason. Otherwise he can start his own and team and try and build up from a last place team.

You screwed up by not sticking to your guns. Did you explain to "J" what was at stake, the importance of him winning his match? If you did he most definitely would not be on my team again. I do not like the APA league system where you are on a team, you show up to compete with your team but maybe you will not be playing, that does not sit right with me. I am in BCA leagues, I like that system much better where everyone plays that night.

I'm captain of an APA Masters team. We came in 2nd out of about 15 in the summer season.

There is no way anyone on my team would do what "J" did, simply because there are no jerks on my team. The day before each match I write down our opponents records for the current and last several seasons. Based on that I try to rank each of their players from best to worst (first to forth). Then on game night I decide the matches.

You may be putting too much faith in "who's hot tonight". Plenty of times I've personally played bad in practice and then good in my match, and vise versa. Actually during the regular season we have a schedule written down and one player each week does not even need to show up.

Finally, I think you are putting too much faith in your original plan. Anything could have happened; you could have still easily lost under your original plan.

that ain't very nice!

Yeah, it's your fault. Sorry to be so blunt, but you asked. You made your decision, but when J starting b1tching you began to doubt your decision and starting looking for ways to get him in. Basically, you were telling him if the other guys game is off, you will J play,,,,what ?? Put a good player against the other team weak guy and take the win.

So, it looked like you were caving, and J decided he will make it official by setting,up the game, you left too much slack in the rope, and he tightned it. You are the captain, and you could have told the other captain I will let you know my decision, and J is not making the call....

I thought it was beyond silly that you thought you had to play the other guy first before making a decision?? Apologize to your team for letting them down, and tell J he is off the team next time he does not step off when he is told he is not playing.

The above is the simple truth with no sugar coating. I have been team captain, more importantly I have pushed many hard money jobs, you get what you bid and how you run the job determines if you make more than predicted or less, or even go in the hole.

If you are going to be the leader it is your job to lead and it is your responsibility to the team. Doesn't matter if people get mad, they can get glad in the same drawers they are wearing when they get mad!

You are trusted to make decisions. Make them based on the best information at hand and then stick to them. I agree that you can never know what would have happened if you had stuck to your original plan. Water under the bridge now. I wouldn't go head to head with J, I would sit the whole team down and first admit I made a mistake or misjudgment. Then explain that if you are going to continue to lead your word will be final in the future. After that it is just a question if they want you to be captain or if they want to try someone else.

You let down the rest of the team to appease one guy. Bad move, no ifs, ands, or maybes. Learn from it and move on. However realize that there was no lock had you done things differently, you would have just given the team what was in your opinion was their best shot. That is what it is your job to do.

Kick your own butt if you feel the need to but don't spend much time doing it. Time to move on, a little older and a little wiser. You should be a better captain from the experience.

My thoughts exactly. Of course I do not mean any hurt to the OP.

At some point the captain has to be the captain, and enforce his responsibility to set the player roster. Otherwise one, two or more guys will run all over him or her.

Which is exactly what happened here, though if I read the OP correctly he was busy doing something while the player involved was across the room and dead set on running his own agenda.

Maybe that player thinks he cost the team, maybe not. With so many variables to any pool match, it might have gone either way no matter the player matchups.

But it is still supposed to be for fun and entertainment, so live and learn.

Captaining a team is a tough job... I've had to deal with all sorts of crap from teammates, but you just do the best you can. I don't think you can blame yourself for what happened, though. If he had won, everything would have been fine, and you may have lost if you had played too. So it just becomes a game of what if I had done this or that, which does nothing but drive you crazy.

It is a team game, though, so someone selfish enough to put themselves in without consulting the captain or anyone else doesn't deserve to be on the team, imo.
