Fao all professional players!!

One thing though, people like to talk about McEnroe and make comparisons but they are not valid. I think people liked watching McEnroe go nuts it was some kind of perverse entertainment to them. Earl is different, it really makes people uncomfortable when he is doing what he does sometimes, no one enjoys it. You cringe for him when you see him out of control and wish he would stop.

I was at a local tournament once where he was playing a local good player.
The local got ahead of him like 7 to 3 in a race to 11. Earl had missed a few balls and then once again didn't get out. He raked the balls down the table and took his cue apart and fortified. Then he began belittling the local player in front of the audience and his family who had come to see him play the match. Earl said things like, "Your the best, I can't beat you, your the greatest player I have ever seen, and so on some much worse.

This was all prompted by the local player being cheered on by his friends and the crowd because he was playing so well and winning. I doubt anyone who witnessed that display ever would be a fan of Earls again. He has such a history of this a lot of people no longer want to give him a pass just because he can play.

ok, so he has little princess syndrome. Thats hilarious. How can you not be amused? I would be laughing so hard you'll hear me a couple buildings over.

Respect the pros

The same kind of thing happened on Darts forums with the pro players not positng. Okay, most Darts players are more famous than their Billiard counterparts but still, the same issue arose.

The Darts equivalent to AZB was called Superstars of Darts, and it ran a polcy where you had to respect the professionals. If you didn't, you were banned. I know this first hand - I played PDC darts back in 2007, did a report on an event in Scotland where I made reference to Wayne Mardles dip in form due to not practicising and more time spent poker (this was a fact as I seen him playing cards whenever he wasnt playing a game and heard him saying he didn't pick up darts before tournament.) That wasn't even disrespectful and I got banned for it!!

There's no need for brown nosing, just a bit of decorum and the forum may be a little better for it. Plus the players can promote themselves without fear of being flamed for no reason.

When I spoke with thorsten hohmann last week his answer was short and to the point "azb.. to many people that can't run two balls and think they know how to fix pool"

I wouldn't post here much either probably.

Well that assessment is dead on, describing a certain group of people here, but there are other groups of people here too. Just like anywhere else in the world though... you could have a group of 50 well behaved, positive people and you throw in 2 troublemakers or negative people and they can wreck havoc on the whole group. A outsider passing thru would think the whole group was dysfunctional:D

Jay Helfert has a great outlook on this place and the role he plays in it. That's why he survives and enjoys it. People can get too wrapped up in it and it can overtake their lives. People can also get too wrapped up in themselves, and think they are more then what they really are.

You have to stay grounded and realize you're the same person you are in life. You're no king here, you're no expert here, you're the same bloke you are in real life. It's amazing how 4 or 5 people could give someone some praise or tell them they are this great person, just because of something they did or said, next thing you know they think they are a star and now they expect star treatment and become a diva.

I could have 100 people tell me I'm the greatest thing since the invention of CTE, or I could have 100 people tell me I'm the biggest idiot they've ever seen or heard from.... doesn't matter to me... I'm still the same person. After all... it's JUST THE INTERNET.

People I know that are well grounded and that I respect, their praise or criticism means much more then people I don't know from a hole in the ground, but there a very few people that fall in that category because it takes a long time to get a true read on a person, just by reading posts in a forum by them. It is possible though, I think I can judge a person of who they are by their posts, but it takes quite a while and you have to read every post by them for a long time to get a true read on them.

I can read a person in a pretty short time in person, but it's much more difficult to do, just by reading words in a forum.

It just so happens the other day, I was looking at the Ask The Pros forums... the people they got subforums for, don't post anymore, so they need some new people in there. At least one of them, is sadly no longer with us anymore.

All in all though.. it's just a forum, a mix of cool people, positive people, negative people, people with passion for the sport that want to make a difference, people that could care less about it, troublemakers, blowhards, people that donate, people that take only... it's a wide variety.

It's like.... real life, except we're putting all those personalities in a small room and you can walk in the door and walk out anytime you want, but once inside, it's small, everything is magnified.

Just have fun with it, don't take it too seriously.. if you find you, step away for a bit. Don't wait until you've had a meltdown. Your meltdown will never be forgotten in a forum.

I hope the pro pool players don't look down on their fans. The fans in any sport may obviously not be as good as the pros but we do enjoy watching them and support them too.

By the way, even the pro players don't know how to "fix pool." Going on strike, for example, isn't going to fix pool as the ABP pros may have finally figured out by now.

Well, if Mr. Hohmann knows how to fix pool, he ain't sharing that info... unless where we are today constitutes being "fixed". :p

And I'm one of those that can't run two balls, so what do I know?

I do, however, like to read and hear from those who really do know something about this game, and it's even more special when we get to interact with some of those people. The "we" meaning the dregs like me that can't run two balls.

So I appreciate it when John Schmidt drops by here, and Grady, and John Brumback, and Jay Helfert, and Keith.... and so on. It's a shame that too many folks here would rather take pot shots at these folks than to actually give them a little space, and not try to drive them away. No, I don't think that the pro's need to be coddled, or brown-nosed to. But I do believe they deserve a bit a respect, and to be given some latitude when they stop by. They don't need to be here, and are doing the rest of us a bit of a favor by participating.

(Unless/until they start acting out here, then they get what they have coming, of course. )

And as others have noted, if done the right way, this forum can be a great promotional vehicle for them. Sadly, I fear the ABP didn't recognize this fact until it was too late.
