I love Fargo Billiards.
This post is overdue. I live in the Minneapolis, MN area. Fargo is about a 3.5 hour drive away if my friend is driving, 2.45 hours away if I'm driving. Point is, it's not next door. But if there's anywhere in the world I want to play, it's Fargo.
I took my dream vacation. I took Th/Fr off work, jumped in the car with my friend, and drove to Fargo. We unplugged our cell phones, got on the table, and practiced for two days straight. Drills, the break, safeties, ghost w/o side pockets, rail shots, etc. Just a little boot camp. My idea of paradise.
Mike Page, the proprietor, set us up with a nice 9 foot table in a good location. He took good care of us and treated us like we were honored guests, and like he was lucky to have us. It's the other way around. It's an honor to rub elbows with anyone with enough business savvy to look around Fargo, ND, and see potential to launch the biggest pool hall in the country, and then to do so...profitably!
Why do I like Fargo Billiards so much? It's not because of the action, or the tournaments he runs, or anything like that, although he has put on quite a few events and I wouldn't have to look far to get played up there. No, it's the ambiance. It is a pool museum. There is literally pool art on the walls, the entire place has stage lighting for the pool tables, and in general it is just professional. It feels like I'm in a pro tournament, even when I'm just doing a line drill. And in a world that is being consumed by 7 foot tables, dance music, bars, bean bag tosses, karaoke, and god knows what else, Mike caters to the masses while still keeping pool in the center.
So to those who haven't been there, get there. Even if you have to buy a plane ticket. Or drive a few hours out of the way. And to Mike, thank you for taking us in for the weekend and for all you do for pool.
